2on Kannada is the one paper pulling down my daughter's class 10 marks
The reading-aloud idea works for Kannada too. We speak Kannada at home and my mother does this with my daughter, and the key seems to be that the listener cares about the story and doesn't correct every word. For the class 10 paper though, if the writing section is the problem and the paper has set formats for letters and essays, a few weeks with a tutor on just those might be enough. Not a full-year tutor ❤️
1on IB grade 3 to State Board class 4 at Dazzling High School. How do kids handle the first real exams?
IB parent of a 16 year old here. For what it's worth, my daughter also rushed and got upset in the early grades. She's writing proper exams in the Diploma now and copes fine. The rushing calmed down once exams stopped being rare events. A State Board class 4 might do that for your daughter, not just stress her ❤️
3on Last Diwali she hid from the crackers. This year the in-laws are planning a big terrace night
Ours was exactly like this at 4. We sat one floor below the terrace with a pair of ear muffs and she watched the sparklers from the stairwell door. By the end of the night she was asking to hold one. No pressure, just a way in.
0on Grandparents want our 2 year old's ears pierced before Diwali
Our daughter had hers done at about one, because that was the family custom and we didn't think hard about it. She's 16 now, doesn't remember any of it, and has been choosing her own earrings since she was ten. I don't think either path is wrong. The pressure fades once it's done or once you're clearly not doing it; it's the in-between that drags.
0on Renting a cot and high chair for 10 days in Kondapur over Diwali?
Kondapur apartment groups are your best bet. When ours was small we lent our cot to visiting families in the building three or four times. People are usually glad to clear the space for a while ❤️ Just wipe it down and check the bolts when it arrives.
1on How does St. Mary High School in Amberpet handle birthdays in the nursery classes?
Rules like that only stick once a few families go first. When my daughter was in nursery we sent a box of laddoos and nothing else, and the next two birthdays in her class did the same. Nobody wants to be the first one to send less. Someone has to be.
0on Is there a shop around Somajiguda that measures toddler feet properly?
Go in the late afternoon rather than the morning, because feet are a little bigger by then, and take the socks he actually wears. The good place we used would press near the toe and look for about a thumb's width of space in front. If a shop doesn't do even that much, I'd walk out. I can't name the shop with any confidence. My daughter is 16 now and it has probably changed hands twice since.
2on Daughter wants to go into UX research, like me. What would she even study for it?
She's doing maths and visual arts, so hopefully a few doors stay open. Thank you both, this is reassuring ❤
3on Looking at Gowtham Model School in Kothapet so our son can come to the family shop after class
No experience with this school. When our daughter was in class 2 she went to an aunty in our building for the afternoons. The main thing for her was a quiet corner and someone who checked she'd eaten. A shop could give that too, if there's a corner away from the counter.
We chose the international route for our daughter and it has suited her, she likes the coursework style. But I'd be honest about the practical side: fewer tutors around if she ever needs help, and you have to think about how colleges here look at it later. Good that you're looking into it early ❤
0on School and tuition teach class 12 accounts formats differently. Which one does the board accept?
IB here, so I cannot help on the CBSE format itself. What I would do is ask her school teacher to mark one answer written the tuition way and explain what is missing. Then she knows instead of guessing ♥
0on Evening football around Bachupally for a 7 year old who mostly wants to run
I drive back through Miyapur most evenings and see a couple of turf grounds with kids' groups, mostly on weekends from what I can tell. Weekday evenings might be harder to find, but it might be worth stopping in and asking.
0on Class 10 daughter knows the answers but runs out of time in every model paper
Counting lines helped my daughter too. The other half for us was teaching her to skip a question she was stuck on and come back to it at the end. She used to sit on one sum for fifteen minutes out of stubbornness ❤️
3on Sri Chaitanya in Attapur for LKG next year. How much written work do the little ones get?
That matches what we found when we were choosing for our daughter, years ago now. Two branches of the same school, completely different feel. One thing that worked for us: ask for the timetable of an ordinary LKG week and count how many periods are at the desk and how many are outdoors, music or play. It says more than the brochure does ❤️
Middle months of my partner's pregnancy for us, and it was the right call. My partner directed and I carried 😄 The one thing I'd change: we unpacked the kitchen last and should have done it first.
1on Our 3 year old will only eat what she serves herself. About half reaches the plate
Our daughter went through this too, though a little older than yours. What worked for us was keeping the hot dishes on our side but letting her serve the cool ones from the real vessels: curd rice, salad, the dry curry once it had cooled. She got her vessels, we got fewer burns. A steel tray under her plate caught most of the rest.
3on Children's library near Hafeezpet or Miyapur for rainy Saturdays?
Some years back we used to take our daughter to a little children's reading room above a bookshop in Kondapur, but that was some years ago and I'm not sure it's still running, so please call before you go. The public library near us has a children's shelf but nowhere comfortable to sit. A Saturday with grandpa and books sounds lovely ❤️
3on Class 12 commerce and CA Foundation coaching in the same year?
'CA or maybe BCom' is a very honest answer at her age. Our daughter's friends move as a group too, and the group decision always sounds more certain than any one of them is. If the centre allows a trial week, that might tell you more than another conversation. Good luck with the weekend talk ❤️
1on 7 year old wants kathak because of the spinning. Nearest class is 7 am on Saturdays
The twirling skirt was the whole reason ours started dance at 7. She stayed with it for six years. Once a week was plenty at that age. The 7 am slot might even help, because it won't clash with anything else when the school activities pile up ❤️
1on Kids' 2 km run at the city marathon in August. Sensible for a 6 year old?
Our daughter did a kids' run at around seven. Practical bits first: the start is chaotic, so stand at the back of the kids' pen, not the front, or he'll get swept along too fast and be done in 300 metres. Walking breaks are completely normal in that category, half the children walk. She walked the middle stretch and sprinted the end for the cameras. The medal is still on her wall ❤️
0on Our preschooler's fistful of curry leaves made the best rasam in weeks
This is lovely ♥ Write down how much he added before you forget, because he will ask for exactly that rasam again.
Kind of you to ask for her. One practical thing from a friend who moved her daughter in primary: get the transfer certificate from the current school started early. Small schools can take weeks to issue it in May when the office staff are on leave.
6on Class 1 report says 'not yet reading independently'. Do I do anything over the summer?
Different age for us, but our daughter didn't read a full chapter book on her own until well into class 2, and now she's the reader in the house. The guessing-from-pictures stage felt endless at the time. I'd keep it fun over the summer.
6on class 1 admission form wants a 'current parent as reference'. we don't know anyone there
When our daughter changed schools a few years ago, we asked the office directly what a field like this was for. They said it was so the parents' committee could welcome new families. Might be something just as harmless here ❤️
2on Moved dinner before bath for our 1 year old. Two weeks in, bedtime is 45 minutes earlier
Did you change anything about the bath itself, water temperature or how long it lasts? With our daughter the warm water was what made her drowsy, so moving the bath closer to sleep did most of the work.
