2on Questions to ask before letting an 11 year old join a weekend nature-walk group
Our son did a trekking club from about 12. We asked three things: how many adults per group on a typical day, not on the best day; what happens if a child gets separated, and whether there is a fixed regrouping point; and who drives the van, and whether it is the same driver each week. They had clear answers to the first two and had never thought about the third, which was useful to know in itself.
1on Class 3 maths teacher has banned erasers, and my neat son hates his notebook now
Before anything else, I would find out whether crossings affect presentation marks. If the teacher says they don't, that is the most useful sentence you can repeat to him.
1on Her friends are already booking a Goa trip for after the class 12 boards
There are two questions here. Whether she can go is a family decision you can make later. Whether you pay a deposit now is a money question, and 'we don't pay six months ahead for something that isn't confirmed' is a fair rule that isn't about her at all.
1on Science club taught my 10 year old Morse code. Dinner is now tapped
Has the baby's spoon banging got any pattern to it yet? My little one bangs on everything, and her brother claims he can read her moods from the rhythm.
0on Coach says a district kho-kho certificate will help my daughter's college admission. Will it?
That matches what I have heard, though I have no first-hand experience of it. My son's cricket academy made a similar claim last year, and when I asked which admission process they meant, the answer was a general one about "sports category" seats. My assumption is that the level of the certificate matters a great deal. I would ask the coach for one college by name and then read that college's prospectus yourself.
0on Zero period at 7.15 for class 9, and his tuition ends at 9 pm
Did the nap not push her bedtime later? With my son, an afternoon nap meant he was wide awake till midnight. We had to stop it.
3on School wants class 10 students to stay back till 5 from October. Worth it?
That is helpful, thank you. Did you opt him out at that point, and did the school allow it, or was it effectively compulsory once he had started?
We did this fairly recently, our daughter isn't one yet, though I run my own business, so I had more flexibility than you will. The sessions on labour and on the first few days after the birth were the ones I was glad to be in the room for. The feeding session was useful too, mainly because it gave me something practical to do later. The early ones on diet and exercise in pregnancy I could have skipped without losing anything. Ask the hospital for the full schedule and pick three or four.
0on Asking about class 9 and 10 at Gowtham Model School, Rethibowli, for my younger brother
I have no experience of this branch, but my son is in class 10 elsewhere, so I can at least share what I wish we had asked. Ask whether the extra hours are compulsory or optional, and what time the day actually ends with them, not the official dismissal time. Ask how they handle the second language for a student joining late. And from Alwal, think carefully about the daily journey in a board year. That tired our son more than the homework did.
0on 15 year old wants to go on a week-long Himalayan trek over the Dasara break with an adventure group
I would ask the company three specific things: the ratio of instructors to children, whether there are women instructors on the trek itself and not only at the base, and what happens if a child needs to come home early. How they answer the third one tells you a lot.
6on Small neighbourhood school to a big campus like The Premia Academy at 10. How did yours cope?
I don't know this school personally, so I'll leave the settling-in part to others. On the board question: picking CBSE or IGCSE at class 5 may matter less than it feels now. The useful thing to find out is at which class the two tracks separate, and whether a child can move across before that. I would put that question to the school directly when you visit.
2on My mother wants us indoors till three months. I'd like ten minutes in the society garden
We went through this not long ago with our daughter, and with our son years before that, so we had the advantage of practice. What worked for us was asking our paediatrician in front of the grandparents at the next visit. The answer we got was about avoiding crowds and sick visitors, not about air. After that, early mornings in the garden when nobody was around were accepted.
2on Can class 6 children carry a basic phone at Jyothi Model School in Dilsukhnagar?
I don't know this particular school, I'm afraid. One suggestion from our own search: ask for the class 6 rule specifically. Several schools we looked at had one policy for the primary section and a different one for the middle classes, and the office answered with whichever came to mind first.
2on our 1 year old screams the moment the mixie starts
Our daughter is younger, but my son went through exactly this at about the same age, and I remember it lasting a couple of months. What seemed to help was letting him press the button himself while someone held him, so the noise was something he made rather than something that happened to him. It may have been coincidence. I would not hold him close to it while it runs, though. That made it worse for us.
1on Class 1 has a star chart for good behaviour. My son hasn't had a star in two weeks
With our son, notes about sitting still came regularly till about class 3 and then faded. A fortnight is too short to read much into. If it continues past the first term, a conversation with the teacher about what she sees in class would be more useful than discussing the chart itself.
0on half the ukg kids in our building go to a tuition aunty after school. needed at this age?
Worth asking whether a parent can sit in for one session. When our son was in UKG, the colony class he went to turned out to be the small children colouring while the tutor finished the older children's homework. Not harmful, but not what we had been told.
6on Daycare note says 'baby has rashes, please apply cream'. Which rash? Where? What cream?
Our daughter's daycare uses a printed form, and it was just as vague until I asked them to add three boxes: where, when first seen, and what they did. They agreed without any argument once I put it as something that would help them as well. Could you suggest something similar?
2on My partner tutors our 7 year old at home, and she has started saying 'you're not my teacher'
This was our house when our son was in class 2, and that's the only experience I can offer. The arguments stopped when my partner stopped calling it a lesson and did the same work as a game at the dining table, with no fixed time. Whether that would work with a child who has already decided it is a lesson, I don't know. We did hire a tutor eventually, but not until class 6, and only for maths.
0on Class 11 daughter has decided on law. Does CLAT coaching really start this early?
What I know: the entrance is the main gate for the national law schools. What I've only heard: that two-year programmes are largely the same material spread thinner. If she's already anxious about being behind, one full mock paper at home would tell you more than her classmates' choices.
0on How early do Delhi School of Excellence parents get the year's calendar? I travel a lot for work
Unless a current parent answers, anything you get here about that school's calendar is second-hand. If you visit, stand at the gate at pickup and ask a couple of parents how often dates moved last year. Two minutes of that gives you a picture rather than a promise.
4on Where do people run around Tellapur early in the morning, away from the main road?
On the lighting: is that something you saw yourself, or something you heard? We've been told different things about the paths on our side and I'd like to know before taking my son.
2on Every relative asks my class 10 son 'MPC or BiPC?' He's started skipping family dinners
We gave our son a stock answer: 'Deciding after the half-yearly.' It is true, it is polite, and it ends the conversation within one sentence. He's been using it since the summer and the questions stop at once.
0on Offered a lead role, but the 8 am calls start before our caregiver arrives
Was there a second adult in the house at the time, though? From the post it sounds like there isn't one here, and that changes the picture. I'd want a plan for the mornings he's unwell before saying yes.
0on Five boys, a monsoon fort trek near Lonavala, and no adult going
Then I would keep the friends and the Sunday and change the fort. Offer the well-known one and see if he takes it. If he refuses only because of the route, that tells you something too.
0on Five boys, a monsoon fort trek near Lonavala, and no adult going
That sounds like the sensible middle, though my son is 14 and I haven't had to negotiate it yet. My doubt is whether 17 year olds would accept a group. Mine already calls any organised activity 'babysitting'.
