Questions to ask before letting an 11 year old join a weekend nature-walk group

Our 11 year old daughter has been invited by a classmate to join a weekend nature-walk group. They meet early on Sunday mornings, go to a lake or a hill outside the city in a hired van, and are back by about eleven. It is run by a few volunteers, and some parents come along. I like the idea a great deal and would happily go myself. My difficulty is that I know the classmate's family but none of the other adults. Before saying yes I would like to ask the organisers sensible questions, without it turning into an interrogation. If your child does something like this, what did you ask, and what did you only realise later that you should have asked?

Our older one joined a birding group like this at 11. I went along the first two times, which nobody minded, and after that I knew who the regulars were, so letting him go alone felt different. Maybe ask if a parent can come for the first couple of walks 🙂

my son's 7 so i always go along on the sunday walks near us. what i noticed is how much the number of adults changes. eight one week, two the next.

Our son did a trekking club from about 12. We asked three things: how many adults per group on a typical day, not on the best day; what happens if a child gets separated, and whether there is a fixed regrouping point; and who drives the van, and whether it is the same driver each week. They had clear answers to the first two and had never thought about the third, which was useful to know in itself.

'run by volunteers' can mean three people who've done it for ten years or whoever turned up that week. i'd ask how long the same adults have been running it. that one answer covers most of the others

Bookmarking this, mine is only 4. Does anyone know of something like this for little ones where parents walk along? Our weekends are all indoor play areas right now ❤️
