A coaching centre is holding a free 'career planning' seminar for class 10 parents. Worth a Saturday?

Our son starts class 10 this month. A flyer came home from a coaching centre near the school: a free seminar this Saturday on 'career planning after class 10', for parents and students together. I'm not against hearing what they have to say, but I assume the real purpose is enrolment in their two-year programme. Has anyone attended one of these? Was there useful information in it, or is it a sales event with slides? I want to understand the streams and entrance exams better, and I don't have many other places to start.

We went to one last year when our son was in class 8, mostly out of curiosity. About twenty minutes of general information on streams, which was fine, and then a long session on their foundation course with forms on every chair. If you go, go for the first part and decide beforehand that you won't sign anything that day.

And leave your phone number off the attendance sheet. Otherwise the calls start on Monday.

went to two of these in bangalore for our son. the talk was forgettable. the q&a was the useful bit, other parents ask the questions you hadn't thought of

From the college side: be careful with any specific cut-off numbers or 'guaranteed' outcomes mentioned at these. They're hard to check on the spot. Write the claims down and look them up afterwards on the official exam and college websites.
