School wants class 10 students to stay back till 5 from October. Worth it?

maple_trail_727

Our son's school has announced extra classes for class 10 from October, until 5 pm on weekdays, instead of the usual 3.30. Attendance is 'strongly encouraged'. The circular does not say who will teach these sessions or what they will cover. He is tired when he comes home even now. On the other hand, we cannot judge whether he would revise those ninety minutes at home with the same seriousness. There is also a baby at home, which does not make for a quiet study room. For those whose children's schools have done this: was the extra time actually teaching, or mostly supervised homework? And did anyone opt out?

Our son's school did this in class 10. The first month was genuinely useful, revision of weak chapters with the subject teachers. After that it slowly became supervised homework. He came home more tired than taught, to be honest.

That is helpful, thank you. Did you opt him out at that point, and did the school allow it, or was it effectively compulsory once he had started?

my niece's school made it 'optional' but you had to submit a form with a reason. we wrote that she had tuition at 5, which was true, and that was the end of it. nobody followed up.

Depends on who's taking the extra class. Ma ammayi's school had the same subject teachers so it worked well for her. Also, send a second dabba. Nobody can study till 5 on a 12 o'clock lunch.

The second dabba is real. In my inter college the 4 pm snack was the only reason anyone stayed awake for the last class.
