Science club taught my 10 year old Morse code. Dinner is now tapped

cobalt_spoon_2632

She came back from the club on Friday with a printout of the alphabet and has been tapping on the dining table ever since. 'Pass the salt' takes about a minute. Her baby sister bangs her spoon in reply, which my daughter insists is also a message 🙂 I've learnt SOS and nothing else. It turns out that covers a lot of conversations at home.

wait till she taps it on the desk in class during a test 🤷 my elder one had a whole system with a friend in class 7. got caught by a teacher who knew morse herself

Ha, I hadn't thought of that at all. I'll keep quiet and hope her teacher knows Morse too.

Semaphore flags were the version in our house, after a scout camp. It faded after a month, but he still remembers the alphabet years later, which is more than I can say for most of his class 5 syllabus.

Has the baby's spoon banging got any pattern to it yet? My little one bangs on everything, and her brother claims he can read her moods from the rhythm.

Mostly one message: 'more food'. My daughter decodes it as that every time, and she's right every time.

Ask her to teach you the numbers next. Then she can tap out her half-yearly marks for you.

Read this out to my son and he immediately invented his own code, which only he understands. He's 6, so it's mostly long and short shouts. Good luck to all of us.
