15 year old wants to go on a week-long Himalayan trek over the Dasara break with an adventure group

dusk_paper_4429

My daughter found a trek for teenagers run by an adventure company, a week in the mountains during the Dasara holidays, flight and train included. Two girls from her class are going. She has the itinerary printed and highlighted. She has never been away from us for more than two nights, and that was a school trip with her own teachers. I don't know these people at all. My partner is more relaxed about it than I am. If your child has done something like this, what did you check before saying yes?

check if her school knows the company. a lot of schools use the same few for their own trips, and the teachers will have an opinion

Ask for their safety record in writing, and for the name of a parent from a previous batch you can call. A decent company will have both ready. If they hesitate, that is your answer.

i'd be more worried about the train with a group of 15 year olds than the trek itself. ask who's travelling with them

Ours did a school trek camp in the hills at 14. What helped me was making her do the research: the route, the altitude, the packing list, what the group does at night. By the time she'd presented it to us, half my worries were answered and the other half were questions she went and asked the organisers herself.

Mine is in class 11, and between school and NEET coaching there is no time for anything this year, not even a weekend outing. If yours wants to go at 15, please consider it seriously. These years go quickly.

What is the actual worry? Altitude, strangers, or her being away for a week? Each one has a different answer, and only the second one is about the company.

Strangers, mostly. I spoke to the organiser yesterday. Groups of 18, two of the guides are women and walk with the group, and they gave me the number of a parent whose son went last year. I called her in the evening. Leaning towards yes, with a call home every night.

I would ask the company three specific things: the ratio of instructors to children, whether there are women instructors on the trek itself and not only at the base, and what happens if a child needs to come home early. How they answer the third one tells you a lot.
