half the ukg kids in our building go to a tuition aunty after school. needed at this age?

she takes them for an hour at 5. writing practice, she says. my grandson's parents are thinking of sending him too, mostly so he isn't the only one left in the play area. he can write his name and count to fifty already. i can't see what an hour of tuition adds in ukg. their decision, not mine, but i'd like to hear from people who tried it or didn't

  • it was like this in our building in pune too, when mine was that age. we didn't send. she was a bit behind on neat writing in class 1 for a few months, then not

We made the same call, years back. The ones who went had tidier handwriting in class 1. By class 3 you couldn't tell who had gone and who hadn't. That's all I noticed.

we sent our elder one at 5, mostly because her building friends were all going. she liked it for the snacks and the company. the writing i couldn't see any difference in. stopped after a few months when it clashed with swimming

What happens in that hour, though? Writing practice, homework help, or mostly colouring? That would decide it for me.

Worth asking whether a parent can sit in for one session. When our son was in UKG, the colony class he went to turned out to be the small children colouring while the tutor finished the older children's homework. Not harmful, but not what we had been told.

my son went for a few months last year. what i noticed was he stopped showing me his school book because 'aunty already checked it'. small thing but i missed it
