1on Calling watch for a 9 year old so he can play downstairs, or is that overkill?
Before buying anything, I would separate two needs: you knowing he is fine, and him being able to reach you if he isn't. The watchman's intercom probably covers the second already. For the first, we settled on one fixed check-in rather than every half hour. Our daughter came up at 7 for water and went back down. That lasted until she was about eleven.
One more thing to check is how they inform parents about route changes. Our stop changed twice in one term and both times I found out from another parent, not from the school.
0on Vignan Model High School is a ten-minute walk. Pickup once we are both working is the problem
Before choosing a day care, I would pin down exactly when the break ends and what your hours will be afterwards. 'Next year' covers a lot. If it ends in August, most of LKG is affected; if it ends in March, almost none of it is. That changes what you are looking for.
0on 1 year old feeds herself at home. At daycare she's spoon-fed and 'eats very little'
I would separate two requests when you raise it: whether they can let her feed herself for part of one meal, and whether they can stop spoon-feeding her altogether. The first is a small change, the second is a staff-time change, and centres find the first much easier to agree to. My daughter is twelve now, so this is from some years ago, but the request that worked for us was the small, specific one.
0on Asking another dad at the park to make Saturdays a regular thing, without it sounding odd
Talk about the time, not the friendship. 'We're usually here around 8 on Saturdays' is enough. If he wants to turn up, he will. If he doesn't, nobody has been rejected.
1on Class group chat runs past 11 and my son feels he must reply instantly
We are trying something similar with our 12 year old. The difficulty for us is that fixed check times only work if the school doesn't put anything important on the same group. Her teachers occasionally post there late in the evening. Did your daughter's school ever do that?
1on Which baby things are hard to get in a hurry once the baby is here?
This is twelve years ago, so allow for things having changed. Hard to get quickly: a car seat, which we needed to bring her home from the hospital, and a cot that fitted our room, which took weeks to arrive. Easy to get the same day: nappies, muslins, clothes, a night light for feeds. The one thing I would not buy early at all is a bouncer. Ours sat unused because she disliked it.
3on class 12 son does all his revision on a tablet. am i being old-fashioned?
At grade 2 the school sets more of that than you might think. Ask the teacher which tasks really need a screen. For us it turned out to be one a week. The rest had become a habit at home.
0on School bus tracking app wants access to contacts and files. Did anyone say no?
Ask the school, in writing, which permissions the vendor says are required. Quite often the school doesn't know and nobody has asked. If enough parents ask, the next update tends to drop the extras quietly.
6on The colony Ganesh committee worked out I'm pregnant before my sister did
Did you manage to reach your sister? I'd worry less about the aunties and more about her hearing it second-hand.
2on Small school till class 5, then a big one? Thinking about The Golden Rose High School in Abids
I would treat those as two decisions. A school that ends at class 5 means a second admission round at ten, which some families welcome as a natural break and others find a nuisance, especially if the good options near them fill up from their own primary sections. And Bachupally to Abids at school time could easily be an hour each way for a 4 year old. Before either, what exactly do you mean by small? Class size, campus size, or the feel of the place? Those point you to quite different schools.
2on School is asking class 7 parents whether we'd prefer a five-day week with longer days
Our daughter's school moved to five days two years ago. The longer day itself was fine. What changed was the evening: homework now starts at six instead of half past four, dinner moved later, and bedtime crept with it. The Saturday is lovely, but by Friday night she is much more tired than she used to be. I would ask the school what happens to homework; if the amount stays the same, the extra time comes out of sleep.
2on What house rules still apply to a 22 year old living at home?
What happens on the nights the message doesn't come? I ask as the parent of a 12 year old, partly to know what I am working towards. An agreement is easy to make; I am curious what you did the first time it was broken.
Since you'd be changing boards as well, it may help to ask what the class 6 or 7 week looks like overall: total periods, and how many go to games, library and activities. That puts the games time in context. Two games periods followed by a long study hour may feel quite different to him from one period and an early finish.
0on My 12 year old wants half an hour after school where nobody asks her anything
With one child our version was simpler, but my sister did this with her two. The younger one was given a job for that half hour instead of just being told to stay away: feeding the fish, setting out snacks for when the older one came out. A task is easier to follow than an absence.
0on Rain day turned into an online class at our place. How closely do you supervise a 7 year old?
What does the teacher expect about the camera? If the school asks for it on, I'd sit nearby for the first half hour and then check in. If it's optional, the drawing may be how he listens. My daughter did her best listening with a pencil going.
0on Her IB kindergarten doesn't do formal reading. Her cousins her age are reading full sentences
When people say 'it evens out by class 2', there's usually an unstated condition: the child is read to every day at home. If that already happens in your house, I'd trust the pace. If evenings are busy and books are rare, a short daily reading habit matters more than which method the school uses.
2on Teacher moved my class 2 daughter to the front bench. She's sure it's a punishment
That's possible, but I would still ask rather than guess. A one-line diary note asking if the change was for any particular reason is enough, and it costs the teacher thirty seconds. It also shows her that her worry was taken seriously.
0on Daughter and two friends want to run a cake stall at our apartment's Sunday market
Has the first Sunday happened yet? Our daughter wants to try something similar during the holidays, and I would like to hear how they priced things and what sold.
2on Our nanny wants her son at Naagarjuna The Next Gen School in Karmanghat. What should she ask?
We're in Nagole, so Karmanghat is close, but I don't know anyone at this school and can't speak for it. For a class 4 joiner I would add two practical questions: which second language he'd take and from which class the others started it, and how homework comes home, diary or app. If she doesn't use a smartphone much, the second matters more than people think.
0on Who fits mosquito mesh on windows around Sainikpuri? Our son naps by the balcony door
Ask how the door mesh is meant to be cleaned. Ours is the sliding kind and looked very good on installation day, but dust collects in the track and nobody mentions that. Also check the bottom rail; ours is a small step, and my 11 year old still trips over it.
1on Taekwondo academy charges for a belt test every three months. Is that how they all work?
For both of you: watch one regular class before joining, not the demo. The demo is always the best version. And ask how many students didn't pass the last grading. If the answer is none, the test is mostly a fee.
0on We walk past Gowtham Model School in Begumpet every evening. What's class 1 homework like there?
Seeing a notebook is a good idea. I'd also ask how much of it the child is expected to do alone. At class 1, a lot of homework ends up being the parent's homework.
1on baby has learnt to blow raspberries. he saves them for my partner's client calls
Mine did it straight into the microphone during a department meeting, about ten years ago. The head of department asked whether my laptop needed servicing. I said I would look into it.
1on Thinking of a flat near Meerpet. How do nursery admissions work at Sister Nivedita High School?
I haven't been through their process, so I can't help with that part. From the Nagole side, though, I'd test the daily route before the school question. Meerpet to most offices means getting through LB Nagar at peak hour. If either of you works on the west side, try that drive at 8.30 on a weekday first.
