Vignan Model High School is a ten-minute walk. Pickup once we are both working is the problem

linen_gecko_2992

Our younger daughter is 4 and we are looking at Vignan Model High School for LKG next June. It is a ten-minute walk from us in Vanasthalipuram, and while my partner is on a career break the walk works perfectly. The difficulty is what comes after. The break is planned to end next year, we have no family nearby, and I assume the LKG day finishes well before either of us is home. A walking-distance school is less useful if nobody is there to walk. For Vignan parents, or anyone nearby with two working parents: what do families do for the hours after school? Is there a day care around that collects children from there, or do most people manage with a caregiver at home?

Before choosing a day care, I would pin down exactly when the break ends and what your hours will be afterwards. 'Next year' covers a lot. If it ends in August, most of LKG is affected; if it ends in March, almost none of it is. That changes what you are looking for.

Fair point, I wrote 'next year' without thinking. It's planned for around next August, so most of LKG would be after it. We'd need something in place by the second term at the latest.

My partner is on a break right now too, and we're working through the same thing for next year. What we've decided so far: whoever we find for after school starts at least a month before the break ends, so the handover isn't in the same week as the first day back at work. Still haven't found that person though ❤️

We're doing it the other way. Our daughter is 4 and already at a day care that does pickups from a couple of schools nearby, so we plan to keep her there after LKG starts. The cost is a long day for her, and by Friday she's tired and so are we. No perfect option, just a different kind of tired.

One thing to check with the school before deciding: who they will hand an LKG child over to. Some schools release small children only to listed family members, and a day care staff member or caregiver may need a written authorisation. Better to ask at the office now than find out in the first week.
