3on Thirty-five years in medicine, and my granddaughter's body parts worksheet came back 7 out of 10
Speaking as a primary teacher, the question mark usually means 'where did this come from?' When an answer is well beyond the chapter, some of us wonder whether an adult wrote it, and a question mark is the polite way of asking. I would probably have given the mark and added a note. A line in her diary saying you helped would clear it up.
0on Gave my 13 year old a keypad phone for his tuition bus. Now three of his friends want one
My daughter had a brick too. It survived being dropped in a lake on a school trip. The smartphone that replaced it did not survive one staircase.
0on Switch to an IB school with the Diploma now, so she doesn't have to move again at 16?
Primary teacher at an international school here, so I see the middle-school joiners from the staff room rather than as a parent. At ours, Grade 7 applicants sit a short English and maths assessment, and the previous reports are read alongside it. Most of the children who joined at 11 or 12 settled within a term. The ones who struggled were usually the ones who hadn't wanted to move. Is your daughter keen, or is this more your plan for now?
1on Two-page handover doc for my partner before a 3 day trip. It's our pregnancy, not a project
Use the trip as the start rather than as temporary cover. Hand over whole areas, not tasks. If he books this scan, he books all of them from now on; if he fills the hospital form, the hospital is his, including remembering what to carry. The hard part for me, years ago, was not checking up on it afterwards. Does he keep a calendar at work? If he does, it might help to ask him to run this the way he would run a project there.
2on Son's football team lost 0-9 and he's calling it the best match of his life
Please hold on to that line for later. My daughter is 17 and I would give a lot to hear 'it doesn't matter, we played' about anything at all right now.
1on Daughter made a slide deck to argue for humanities in class 11
My daughter is in class 12 now, and for us the surprises came from the subject combinations rather than the stream itself. Schools offer different electives alongside history, and not every pairing is available. I would sit with her and the school's actual list for class 11 before deciding. Did she say which subjects she wants to take with history?
2on My 4 year old plays school and she's doing my classroom voice
As a fellow teacher I recognised myself in this. My daughter, when she was small, used to send her dolls to the principal's office for talking. The principal was a cushion.
0on He's in class 10 and has picked his career from a salary table
My daughter ranked careers by salary in class 10 too, and teaching came near the bottom, which she made sure I knew. What shifted her wasn't anything I said. She helped at a summer camp at my school and found she cared about the hours and the people far more than the number. She chose something else in the end, but she chose it differently. Is there anyone in the top few jobs on his list he could sit down with for an hour?
4on School and tuition teach class 12 accounts formats differently. Which one does the board accept?
She took one answer to her school teacher on Monday. It was accepted with a note to always include the working notes. So the shorter layout is fine as long as nothing is skipped. Thank you, that settled it more quickly than I expected.
3on From ICSE to State Board in class 1. Anyone done this at St. Johns Global Edu-Tech in Uppal?
In class 1, most children who join from another board need a few weeks of reading practice in the new language subject and very little else. Maths and English at that level overlap a great deal. If the school will share its class 1 book list, you could look through the second-language reader together over a long weekend. Has his current school done any Telugu at all?
6on Fifteen minutes in a light drizzle with my 4 month old, and three neighbours had something to say
Agree about not explaining. With our daughter, my mother-in-law was convinced the evening air brought fever. I moved the walk to late afternoon for a while, mostly for peace at home rather than for any real reason. Sometimes it's worth picking the battle that costs less.
0on Our 13 year old has discovered that 'the baby is sleeping' works on everyone
The dishwasher one is impressive. In my classroom the equivalent is 'my pen ran out' at the start of every written task. He's well ahead of my students.
1on Asking about nursery at Siddartha High School for a hospital colleague who works nights
I don't know this school, but as a teacher I can say most nursery admissions in the city open somewhere between November and January, so she has a little time. Could she phone the office in a lunch break on one of her day weeks? Many schools will also let a family member come in and collect the form. Is there someone at home who could go?
1on Is class 9 at Oxford Grammar School, Himayatnagar, regular school or school plus coaching?
One more question for the visit: are the class 9 unit tests set by the school's own teachers or by an outside coaching partner? The answer tells you a lot about who is really running the day.
1on 14 year old says she wants 'something with animals'. Is shelter volunteering possible at her age?
Many shelters have a minimum age, often 16, or ask that a parent come along for anyone under 18. It may be worth calling to ask whether the two of you could volunteer together. That would also let you see how she handles the less pleasant parts.
2on A boy from her tuition has started dropping our 17 year old home on his bike
That helps. I couldn't sleep thinking about how to begin, and 'would you ride without a helmet with anyone' is a much easier opening than anything I had. I'll talk to her tomorrow before tuition.
6on Came home after a night shift to breakfast my teenagers had made, with instructions
Lovely. Mine started cooking in class 10 because she was bored in the holidays. Two years on, Sunday breakfast belongs to her and I'm not allowed in the kitchen.
4on Her class 12 commerce tuition batch has grown to 40. Move her to a smaller one now?
That made me laugh. She would probably say the same. We'll do the trial class on Saturday and let her decide after that.
3on Her class 12 commerce tuition batch has grown to 40. Move her to a smaller one now?
A trial class is a good idea, I hadn't thought of asking. My other worry is that she likes the friends in her current batch more than she likes the teaching.
0on Four weeks into maternity leave and I've been joining my team's standups 'just to listen'
Does your manager know you're listening in? Sometimes the team starts depending on it, and then 'you were on leave' gets harder to say later. I would tell them plainly that you're stepping away until a fixed date.
3on Every relative asks my class 10 son 'MPC or BiPC?' He's started skipping family dinners
Our daughter chose commerce, and for two years after that the question became 'why not science?' It doesn't stop at the decision, unfortunately. What helped her was a one-sentence reason she could repeat without getting upset, whatever the question was.
1on we chose our daughter's school for the pool and the library. what mattered was the bus stop
As a teacher I would add one item to your list: how the school handles a child who is struggling, not the ones who are doing well. On a visit, ask what happens when a child falls behind in class 2 or 3, and listen for whether the answer is a person or a policy. The email point is a good one. You learn a lot from how long a school takes to answer something small.
1on Class 12 commerce and CA Foundation coaching in the same year?
Fair question. It's mostly the friends, plus a seminar the coaching centre held at their school last month. When I asked her directly she said 'CA or maybe BCom', which isn't really a yes. We'll sit down this weekend before we pay anything.
2on New van route, and our class 4 daughter is now the first pickup at 6.35
If she's sleeping in the van both ways in the first week, she may well adjust in a few weeks; children often do. I'd give it till the end of July before deciding anything drastic. What time does the van bring her home in the afternoon? That half of the day matters too.
1on Two sons a year apart, so a board exam every March for the next three years
I teach younger children, but I see this with siblings in my school every year. The one who isn't in an exam year often gets forgotten, and they notice. During our daughter's class 10 year we kept one evening a week with no studies for anyone in the house. It sounds small, but it was the evening everyone looked forward to.
