14 year old says she wants 'something with animals'. Is shelter volunteering possible at her age?

Her school had a careers session last week and each child had to write down three possible directions. Hers was one line: something with animals. She's in grade 9, so nobody needs a decision yet, but I'd like her to find out what that means before DP subject choices come around. Is volunteering at an animal shelter in Hyderabad realistic for a 14 year old? Begumpet side ideally, weekends only. Or is there some other way for a teenager to see what vet work, wildlife or animal care looks like day to day?

Before looking for a shelter, I would ask her which part she means. Caring for animals, the science of them, or working outdoors are three quite different paths, and a shelter only tests the first. Most of what volunteers do there is cleaning and feeding, which is a useful test in itself.

Cleaning is exactly the test! A girl in my daughter's class signed up for weekend shelter duty last year, very excited. Lasted three Sundays haha. The ones who stayed on were the ones who didn't mind the mess.

Many shelters have a minimum age, often 16, or ask that a parent come along for anyone under 18. It may be worth calling to ask whether the two of you could volunteer together. That would also let you see how she handles the less pleasant parts.
