Came home after a night shift to breakfast my teenagers had made, with instructions

Got in at 8 this morning after a long night. My son had made upma, slightly too much salt, eaten with gratitude. My daughter had plated it and left a note beside the plate: 'Patient to eat within 10 mins. No phone. Go to sleep after.' Nobody asked them to. I don't know yet what they want, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Ours made tea for both of us once, unprompted, in class 11. It took a while to discover it was the opening move in a negotiation about a concert. Enjoy the upma, and keep an eye on the calendar.

The note is the best part. 'No phone' from a teenager, addressed to a parent, is quite something.

Lovely. Mine started cooking in class 10 because she was bored in the holidays. Two years on, Sunday breakfast belongs to her and I'm not allowed in the kitchen.

Frame the note. In a few years it will be the only evidence.

Enjoy it, and also go and look at the kitchen before you sleep. Ha. In our house the boy makes breakfast and the cleaning somehow ends up with me.
