Our 13 year old has discovered that 'the baby is sleeping' works on everyone

It started innocently. He asked us to keep our voices down because his sister was napping. Very considerate. This week he has used it to get out of a phone call with his uncle, to avoid emptying the dishwasher (apparently it's loud), and, tonight, to skip a conversation about his maths test. The baby was awake for that one. She was on my hip, watching him say it. It is working better than any excuse I tried at his age.

Arre, this is genius. Mine used 'Ba is doing her puja' for about two years whenever anyone wanted her downstairs for guests. Enjoy it while the baby can't contradict him 🙂

The dishwasher one is impressive. In my classroom the equivalent is 'my pen ran out' at the start of every written task. He's well ahead of my students.

Give it a year or two. Once the baby can talk, she will be reporting on him, and the balance of power will shift considerably.

Ask him to babysit next time he tries it. See how quickly she wakes up.
