1on Grade 1 'readiness' lists in our parent group are getting out of hand
My daughter did hers two years ago. They asked her name and favourite colour, showed her some pictures and asked her to draw her family. That was it. The lists in our group were far beyond anything that happened in the room.
We didn't apply there, so no idea what their interaction is like. One practical thing: when you call the admissions office, ask what the interaction involves and how long it takes. I did that for my daughter's school and got a plain answer in two minutes. It saved me a month of exactly the kind of drilling you're describing.
0on kannada story books for a 10 year old, anywhere in hyderabad?
We went to the big book fair last December with my daughter and I remember a few stalls with Indian-language children's books, Kannada among them I think. It happens every year around the end of the year. Might be worth waiting for before ordering online.
0on Settling-in period for pre-nursery at Neo School Aizza in Malakpet?
Not this school, but our daughter's pre-nursery did a week of short days with one parent waiting in the corridor. It helped her a lot. I would ask Neo directly whether they do anything similar.
0on New flat in May and nursery in June? Thinking of Fr.Bendel English Medium School for our 3 year old
Not Fr.Bendel, and we didn't move, but my daughter's first month of nursery was tears at the gate most mornings anyway. I'm not sure a move would have made it much worse. At that age, who did the drop-off seemed to matter more than anything else.
3on 3 month old screams through every bath, start to finish
The fan was exactly it for us as well. We only worked it out because one evening's bath was calm during a power cut!
4on I service ACs. New parents keep asking me what temperature to keep for the baby
We used the fan more than the AC when our daughter was tiny, partly because her nani was sure the AC would give her a cold. The doctor said either was fine as long as she wasn't too cold or too hot. Families will have opinions whatever you tell them!
4on Parents at my home daycare ask me when nursery forms open. What should I tell them?
When my daughter was going for nursery, the state board schools near us gave forms later than the bigger CBSE ones, so parents who were only watching the big names nearly missed ours. If you have a notice board for parents, maybe let them pin up whatever dates they hear. That way it's coming from them, not from you.
0on Pull our toddler out of daycare while I'm on maternity leave with the second, or keep her going?
Only one child here, so not quite this. But when my daughter was small, her daycare days were the fixed point of our week, and the weeks she was home sick were the ones where everything came apart. In your place I'd keep her going, maybe half days, so the baby isn't the reason her whole routine changed.
1on ukg son has started saying 'i hate you' whenever the answer is no
We went through this at about the same age. What helped was naming the feeling back without arguing, something like 'you're angry I said no'. It faded in a couple of months. Our daughter is older now and has moved on to slamming doors, so I can't claim we solved anything.
Not a food business, but I ran research sessions with my daughter in a sling when she was small. Two things. People will want to hold her, so decide beforehand whether you're okay with that. And whatever you think will take four hours will take six.
0on Bedtime video call with his grandparents has stretched to 40 minutes
Our Nani does exactly that. She asks my daughter for 'extra time' like it's an exam. We let her have it on Sundays, and the rest of the week the timer wins.
This is roughly how we've run it for years. He does mornings, I do pickup and evenings. It works because it's fixed, not because it's perfectly even. The weeks we 'swap as needed' are the weeks we fight.
0on he plays volleyball with the security guards and drivers every evening. the only kid
This made me smile. My father learnt cricket exactly like this, with the drivers outside his office, and he still talks about them. No advice, let it run.
1on 11 yr old ran a blind mango tasting for the family. numbered pieces, scorecards, everything
The 6 year old giving everything a 5 is the best part. Which one won? My mother-in-law says Banganapalli and nothing else, and I would love some proof against her.
Nowhere near class 10 here, so no facts from me. But the 'did it twice by June' boy is always somebody's son or nephew. Never someone you can ask directly.
0on Our 12 year old wants proper kabaddi coaching after a month of playing in the lane
No first-hand idea about kabaddi, but the summer coaching flyers our colony got last year were mostly from the government stadiums, and a couple listed kabaddi along with athletics and volleyball. Might be worth asking at the stadium nearest you. They tend to be early morning and not expensive.
3on Every girl in her class can ride a cycle except mine. Where around Banjara Hills do people practise?
We taught ours in an empty school ground on Sundays, the watchman let us in once we asked. Took about four Sundays. Lowering the seat so her feet touch flat helped more than anything else.
0on Class 7 timings at Gowtham Model School, Madinaguda, and are Saturdays full days?
No child there, but for comparison: my daughter's English-medium state board school in LB Nagar finishes at 3.30 for the primary classes, and the older classes stay till 4. So 4.15 isn't unusual for middle school, though it's on the long side.
