my 12 yr old started this about three weeks ago, after the summer camp ended. there's a net near the back gate and the evening shift plays after 7. he comes back sweaty and talking, which hasn't happened in a while. part of me wants to find him a proper club with kids his age. the other part says it's the best thing that's happened all summer and i should leave it alone.

I'd leave it, at least through the holidays. My son had something similar with the coaches' own kids at a tennis club and it ended once school started anyway. What I'd want to know is whether the men are happy to have him or just being polite. Has anyone asked them?

up for a work thing so replying now. one of them told our watchman he's 'useful at the net'. so i think they like having him. i'll ask properly though

Our 12 year old would never talk to us after a club session the way you describe. That alone would make me keep it going. A club can come in July if he wants more.

This made me smile. My father learnt cricket exactly like this, with the drivers outside his office, and he still talks about them. No advice, let it run.
