I service ACs. New parents keep asking me what temperature to keep for the baby

cedar_diary_760

I have an AC service business in Sanathnagar. This season almost every second house with a small baby asks me the same thing. What temperature for the baby, should the AC run all night. I can tell them about the machine, cleaning the filter, not pointing the air at the cot. The temperature question I don't want to answer, I am not a doctor. My own children are big now and when they were small we only had a cooler. So I am asking parents here: what did your doctor tell you, and what do you actually do at night? I want to tell my customers something sensible, not my own guess.

Our paediatrician's advice, years ago, was simply that the baby should not feel cold on the chest and should not be sweating. We kept it somewhere in the mid twenties. Your point about the air not hitting the cot is probably the most useful thing you can tell them.

Thank you. Filter and air direction I already tell everyone. I will add the chest and sweating check, and tell them to ask their own doctor for the number.

Ha, this is so useful from the other side. A technician once told us to keep it at 18 for the baby and my mother-in-law agreed with him, so we had a week of a freezing room before our doctor said no, that's far too cold. What I'd really want from a technician is how to clean the filter myself between services. Nobody ever shows you.

Easy, I show customers in five minutes. Switch off at the main, open the front panel, take the filter out, wash under normal tap water, dry fully in the shade before putting it back. In this season every two weeks if the baby sleeps in that room.

Appreciate a technician asking this instead of just answering it. One more thing worth telling them is the noise. Our old split unit clicked every time the compressor came on and it woke our son for weeks before we worked out what it was.

We used the fan more than the AC when our daughter was tiny, partly because her nani was sure the AC would give her a cold. The doctor said either was fine as long as she wasn't too cold or too hot. Families will have opinions whatever you tell them!
