Grade 1 'readiness' lists in our parent group are getting out of hand

rose_kettle_9070

Son is 4, in UKG, and we'll be applying for Grade 1 for next year. The parents' group has started circulating lists of what a child should know before the interaction: reading short sentences, numbers to 100, days of the week in order, writing his full name in cursive. I teach primary myself, at a different school, and even I'm starting to second-guess. Has anyone sat through a Grade 1 interaction recently? What did they ask your child?

Ours was a long time ago, so the format will certainly have changed. At that time it was largely about whether she would speak to an unfamiliar adult, sit for ten minutes and follow a simple instruction. Nobody asked her to write in cursive. I would be curious whether anyone recent has seen more than that.

My daughter did hers two years ago. They asked her name and favourite colour, showed her some pictures and asked her to draw her family. That was it. The lists in our group were far beyond anything that happened in the room.

the lists are the worst part. in my daughter's year someone posted a 40-point one and the same week three kids in the group started phonics classes. i still don't know if any school asked for any of it

Reading this with some dread. My daughter is 2 and I've already been added to a "preschool admissions 2027" group. Is it acceptable to just leave these groups? Or do you end up missing the actual dates?

Same situation, mine is 1. I muted ours after a week and haven't missed anything I needed yet.
