1on Diyas at home with a 2 year old who touches everything
Let him make a small one of his own first, in a corner, with a few colours. My daughter at that age left the main rangoli alone once she had her own to ruin. I can't promise it works for every child, but it costs very little to try.
4on 5 year old asked why her grandparents only live in the phone
Our parents live nearby, so I can't speak to distance. One thing I did notice when my daughter was five: she talked far more to her grandmother when she had something to show, a drawing, a loose tooth, a new frock. Open-ended 'how was school' calls went nowhere. You could let her choose what to show before you call.
0on 12 yr old wants to cycle with her group to a friend's colony across the main road
We allowed this at 13, not 12, but the process may still help. The first time, one parent rode the route with the girls and they agreed together where to cross: at the signal, not wherever there was a gap. Then a call on arrival and a fixed time to leave. The second time nobody went along. It was the trial run that settled the disagreement at home.
0on Grandmother had a lehenga stitched for Navratri. My daughter says it's for a much younger girl
She offered almost exactly that on her own. My mother heard 'only for the photos' and took it as an insult to the lehenga. So the compromise exists. It is the grandmother side that needs work.
1on asked to correct my daughter's maths model paper. she has appealed four half marks
The 'obviously implied' argument is one she should try on you rather than on the actual examiner. Our daughter lost marks in her class 8 papers for exactly that, skipping steps she thought were obvious. I would hold firm on those two.
0on Tuition centre wants my class 3 daughter to take an entrance test. For tuition.
When my daughter joined a maths tuition in class 5 there was a placement worksheet, and it was only used to put children of similar level together. I would simply ask them which it is. If they say some children are not taken, you have your answer about what kind of place it is.
2on First sleepover invite for my 15 year old. Is this normal now?
We've settled on a middle option for our 13 year old for now: she stays for dinner and the movie, and we pick her up at ten. I'd be interested to hear from parents whose daughters did stay the night how it went.
3on 16 year old asked me how much the business makes. How much do you tell a teenager?
Before deciding how much to share, I would find out why she asked. Curiosity, worry about college costs, or something a friend said each needs a different answer. My daughter is younger, so this is not from experience at sixteen, but when she asked a smaller version of this question, it turned out to be about a classmate's holiday.
0on No more hugs at the school gate. She's 11 and I'm taking it badly
It came back for us at around twelve, on her terms. Mostly when she wants something, or after a bad day. I wasn't expecting it to return through the back door, but it did.
0on CBSE to State Board in class 5 and 7 if we move to Moula Ali. Ramnagar Public School?
To add to this: when a colleague's son moved from State Board to CBSE in class 8, his new school asked for a transfer certificate countersigned by the education office. I do not know whether the reverse needs the same, but it is worth asking Ramnagar Public School early which documents they want. It took them three weeks.
1on 1 month old only sleeps in the car. any good slow loops around jubilee hills?
One small suggestion from experience: try a recording of a car engine at home alongside the drives. It took us about a week of using both, but eventually the recording on its own was enough on most nights. It saved a great deal of petrol.
1on Her friends get her live location all day. We don't. She's 16
I think it helps to separate the two concerns you mention. If the issue is safety, a specific arrangement may be easier to agree on, such as sharing location only during travel or late evenings. If the issue is that she shares with friends and not with you, that's a conversation about trust, and it is probably better had without the phone in the middle of it. My daughter is twelve, so I am not speaking from experience of this exact situation.
2on Is tuition worth it just to get a class 8 child through The Merchant of Venice?
Is the difficulty the language or the questions they set? With my daughter (CBSE, a different text) the reading became manageable once she watched a performance. The answer format was where she lost marks. Those need different kinds of help.
0on Niece picked for the Independence Day march past, and practice runs till 5.30 every day
It depends on what the school has already decided. At my daughter's school, children in event practice were told which subjects would excuse homework, but parents only heard it from the children, never from the school. I would first ask your niece exactly what the teachers said, and write to the class teacher only if nothing was said.
1on Class 7 daughter wants to drop maths tuition and study with a friend instead
A written plan for the month is easy to ask for, thank you. I'll also ask the tuition teacher whether she would take her back mid-term if this doesn't work, so we aren't making a decision we can't undo.
2on Teacher called. My son and two friends have been copying a classmate's tics
I'd add one distinction. 'You didn't mean it to be cruel' is fine as an opening, but I'd be careful it doesn't become the conclusion. In my experience children take intent as an excuse if that's where the conversation stops.
1on Fair way to handle a caregiver asking for a raise after three months?
Putting it in a message is a good point. We did the same with our part-time cook, and having it written down avoided a disagreement later about what was included.
My daughter asked about something similar last year. The centre we contacted wanted a parent along for the first visit and a minimum of one session a week for three months, so the children would see the same face. We couldn't commit to that, so we didn't go ahead. I don't know whether that's typical or just their rule.
1on Can I take our toddler to my department for a week while daycare is shut for repairs?
Before planning around your office, is there any chance the university has a crèche or a staff childcare room? Many campuses have one that nobody mentions until you ask the administrative office. Even an hour there during the department meeting would make the week easier. I would also ask whether the daycare can suggest one of their staff for home care that week. Ours did once, when our daughter was small and they closed for a few days.
4on Skating coach says wrist guards 'make kids lazy'. I fix wrists for a living
My daughter's coach also has strong views on equipment, and I have found the useful question is what the rule is protecting. If it's technique, there is usually a way to do both. If he can't explain it, I would trust your own judgement here over his.
