Is tuition worth it just to get a class 8 child through The Merchant of Venice?

ivory_trail_3991

ICSE school, and they've begun a simplified Merchant of Venice this term. My daughter reads the scenes, can't follow who is tricking whom, and after three weeks has started saying she 'hates Shakespeare'. There's a literature tutor near us in Mehdipatnam, but I worry tuition turns it into model answers and she never reads the play properly. On the other hand, the first test is coming and I can't explain Shylock any better than her teacher does. I haven't decided which risk is worse.

Read it aloud at home, everyone takes a part. Our dinner table did Shylock and Portia for two weeks when my daughter had it. She still does the voices 🙂

Is the difficulty the language or the questions they set? With my daughter (CBSE, a different text) the reading became manageable once she watched a performance. The answer format was where she lost marks. Those need different kinds of help.

answer format is the real thing in icse lit. my elder one struggled till her teacher shared one model answer and showed where the marks were. after that she managed without tuition

watching a film version once and then reading is what got my son through it. literature tuition sounds like a lot for class 8
