asked to correct my daughter's maths model paper. she has appealed four half marks

olive_chai_5673

class 9, half-yearly prep. she handed me her model paper and the marking scheme from the back of the book and said i'm the examiner today. fine. i was strict, the scheme was strict. she has now appealed four separate half marks. two on the grounds that the step was 'obviously implied'. one because my red pen 'made it look worse than it is'. i've upheld one appeal so far. the hearing on the rest continues after dinner.

Ha. Mine is in class 6 and argues with the answer key itself. Which appeal did you allow?

the one where she'd written the right answer, crossed it out and written a wrong one. she argued intent. i'm not proud of how fast i folded

The 'obviously implied' argument is one she should try on you rather than on the actual examiner. Our daughter lost marks in her class 8 papers for exactly that, skipping steps she thought were obvious. I would hold firm on those two.

Does she contest the full marks she was given too, or only the deductions? My son's appeals only ever go one way.

My granddaughter is seven and already disputes the stars on her worksheets. Good to know this continues for at least another seven years.

Reading a marking scheme closely enough to argue with it is a skill. Many of the students I teach never open the scheme at all. I would take it as a good sign, though I wouldn't tell her that until the hearing is over.
