Niece picked for the Independence Day march past, and practice runs till 5.30 every day

banyan_diary_508

My niece, who I look after during the week, was chosen for her school's march past. Very proud, of course. But practice is after school till 5.30 for the next two weeks, and she comes home tired, cranky and with homework still to do. I'm away for customer demos two days next week, so her parents will step in, but I'm the one who sees her every evening. Is it reasonable to ask the teachers to go easy on homework for these two weeks, or do I just help her get through it?

It depends on what the school has already decided. At my daughter's school, children in event practice were told which subjects would excuse homework, but parents only heard it from the children, never from the school. I would first ask your niece exactly what the teachers said, and write to the class teacher only if nothing was said.

  • Two weeks is short. I'd let her get through it and not negotiate the homework. She'll remember the march past long after she forgets which worksheet she skipped.

Speaking as a teacher, I'd rather hear from the parent. If a child in practice tells me she's behind, I give her a few days. If nobody tells me, all I see is missing homework. A short note to the subject teachers costs nothing.

Ma pedda ammayi was in the dance for August 15 last year, only class 3 but same story, tired and weepy for two weeks 😊 On the day she was so happy it all felt worth it. Early dinner and early bed was the only thing that helped us.

Is she eating something before practice? My son had cricket nets after school last year and the crankiness was mostly hunger. Lunch at 12.30, then nothing till he got home at 6. A proper snack in the bag fixed half of it.

You were right about the food. She had been skipping her snack because there 'wasn't time'. I've packed peanut chikki and a banana that she eats on the way home, and the last two evenings have been much calmer. Thank you ❤️

  • Both of mine did march pasts and assembly events till class 9, and the homework always sorted itself out. What I'd watch is sleep. If she's up past ten finishing work, that's when I'd talk to the teacher.
