If we shift to Santosh Nagar she'd join Springdales High School for class 10. Bad timing?

2on How much writing do the nursery classes at Amrita Vidyalayam, Secunderabad do?
Same with my daughter years ago, tracing from nursery. By class 1 nobody remembered who started writing when. What mattered more was whether the teacher pushed or let the slow ones take their time. That's harder to see on a visit, but you can ask how they handle a child who isn't ready yet.
0on Son wants to apply abroad for UG. The money is the easier question for us
The question I'd push on is the course. If the same course is available here at a good college, then it's the experience he's after, and that's not a bad reason, but it's a different decision. Worth having that conversation with him openly.
1on 17 year old wants to take the overnight train to Bengaluru with two friends
Live location for the full journey, check-in message when the train leaves and when it arrives. That'd be my deal. We've started her on short trips within the city on the same terms, and she's only 14 🙂
1on If we shift to Santosh Nagar she'd join Springdales High School for class 10. Bad timing?
That's where I'm leaning too. She says she doesn't mind either way, which at that age usually means she minds a lot and hasn't decided in which direction 😊 Going to talk to her properly this weekend.
0on IB final year plus SAT coaching on weekends, or let the SAT go?
This is what I'm already worried about for my daughter, she's a few years behind. Does the coaching usually run right up to the exam or does it stop for the school exams?
2on Might move towards Sanathnagar next year. Anyone know Rose Buds High School for class 3?
Can't speak for that school, I don't know anyone there. On the board side though: our daughter has been in an English-medium state board school since nursery. The primary years were lighter than what her CBSE cousins had, it gets busier from middle school. When you visit, ask to see a class 3 notebook. You learn a lot from how the corrections are done 🙂
1on Every evening she stands at the balcony grill and tells the rain 'po'
Wait till October when it finally stops. She'll take full credit :)
4on Son is in his IB final year and wants a gap year before college
From what I've seen, the people who object most to gap years are relatives, not colleges. Be ready for the questions at every family function.
0on Unreachable for three hours in theatre. What does your caregiver do if something happens?
Same logic at ours, my partner is a doctor so I'm the default number for everything. When our daughter was small the one line we added was for the caregiver's own judgement: crying but still playing, message; not playing, call. Simple enough that she used it :)
Ours has done state board, English medium, right from nursery, and in the small classes the board never felt like the issue. The difference shows up later, in how much gets taught from the textbook versus around it. Can't speak for DKR specifically though, haven't been inside 🙂
2on Class 1 show-and-tell: she took my old chest X-ray, and her teacher had questions
When my daughter was that age she took a tile sample for the same thing and told everyone I make floors. The teacher asked if I could look at the staffroom floor.
1on Four weeks into maternity leave and I've been joining my team's standups 'just to listen'
My partner's a doctor and kept getting case calls during leave. We started leaving the phone on the hall shelf during the baby's naps. A week of grumbling, then a lot more sleep.
6on Anywhere near Mehdipatnam that services old DSLRs? She wants it for photography
We use a freelance photographer for our finished sites, and he's very particular about his gear. He gets his lenses cleaned somewhere around Basheerbagh, I think. I'll ask him for the name this week. He once told me that with fungus the fix can cost more than the lens is worth, so get an estimate before you agree to anything.
0on Our 3 year old's imaginary friend now needs a plate at dinner
Keep the plate. Our daughter's imaginary friend needed a seat in the car for a year and we had to wait for her to 'buckle in'. She's 13 now and it's still one of our favourite stories to tell. She hates it 🙂
1on She told us at dinner that she has a boyfriend. She's 15
My daughter is 13 and my partner and I have already disagreed about this, purely in theory, so this thread is useful. Something I heard from a friend who went through it: they kept the rules the same as for any friend. Where she is, who she's with, home by the usual time. Nothing special for the boy, so nothing to hide either. Not sure it works for everyone but it sounded sensible 🙂
0on 11 yr old wants a proper football coach. Apparently I don't count
Same story with badminton. I was her coach till she was 11, then she wanted someone 'who plays properly'. Fair enough. I still carry the kit bag and I'm still not allowed to say anything from the side 🙂
0on Up at 5 every morning with my 1 year old, and on my own till the caregiver comes
Ours did 5 am for most of her second year. Then one week she just stopped and slept till 6.30. I'd love to tell you what changed but we never worked it out 🙂
1on 10 year old sold his old toys to the younger kids in our block. One mother wants the money back
I run a business, so part of me is a bit proud of him :) But a fair seller doesn't sell to customers who can't understand the deal. I'd have him return the under-sevens' money himself and keep his sale going for kids his own age.
3on Preschool shutting at the end of term, with every admission around us already closed
That's rough timing. A family in our building went through this a few years back, their playschool shut over the summer. They found a place by calling every preschool within 5 km, not visiting, just calling, and asking straight out whether anyone had dropped out. Took about a week. Smaller places were more likely to have a seat than the big names.
1on Most boys in his class are starting all-subject tuition for class 5. We have managed without so far
Part of the reason half those parents send them, in my experience, is that it covers 5 to 7 when nobody is home. Our daughter went for exactly that reason in class 5 and 6, and the 'tuition' was mostly homework done under supervision. If you're home and he's coping, I'm not sure what it adds.
0on My partner has already settled on Maples in Kukatpally for nursery. Our son is still a baby
My partner did exactly this when our daughter was born. Different school, a colleague's recommendation, all decided. By the time she was three we had both changed our minds twice, for reasons nobody could have predicted. Let your partner have the plan for now, it costs nothing yet :)
0on 90s in everything except Telugu, which is 61. Push it in class 7 or let it be?
Bengali family, so in our house Telugu is nobody's language and our daughter still has to write it. She came home with a similar number last year. We stopped fighting about it and a college girl in our building sat with her twice a week for the grammar part. The marks crept up. The love didn't 🙂
