Blue streak in her hair over the Diwali break. Our 14 year old has made her case

cedar_camera_6782

Daughter is 14 and has been asking for a blue streak for months. Her case: it's temporary dye, it washes out in a few weeks, and she'll do it at the start of the Diwali break so it's mostly gone by the time school reopens. My partner says no, mainly because of school rules and partly because of 'what next'. I'm inclined to let her, it's hair. I asked her to check the school handbook and she came back with a page that says nothing about colour either way, which she considers a win. We haven't decided. Did any of you allow this, and did it turn into a problem with school? :)

At 15 I put henna in my hair at my mashi's place before a wedding and it came out bright orange. My mother was furious for a day and then it became a family joke for years. If the handbook really says nothing, I'd let her try it once. The fading stage is its own lesson.

We allowed it for our daughter at 15, during the summer break. Two things I would check. First, whether the dye is genuinely temporary; ours was labelled 'semi-permanent' and lasted far longer than promised. Second, whether the school has an unwritten rule even if the handbook is silent. We asked the class teacher informally beforehand, which avoided any surprises.

In our school days the teacher checked even if we put too much oil in the hair. Now blue is fine! Times have changed. My grandson is only two, so I have some years before anyone asks me this. But do the small test on the skin first, my daughter always says that before any colour.

I wanted to do the same in inter first year and my father said no. I still think about it sometimes 😅 Now I'm going to be a mother soon and I don't know what I will say when my turn comes. But a few weeks in the holidays sounds fair to me.
