1on my 6 year old asked my partner, not me, if she could go down to the play area alone
We have the same arrangement at home, my partner on a break and me at the clinic till late. It did not settle by itself. What helped was a ten-minute chat after the children sleep, only about what changed that day: new rules, school messages, anything she was allowed or not allowed. On the play area question itself, I would have said yes too at 6, inside the building. The part that would bother me is the same as yours, finding out after.
0on grandson may move to stamford grammar in shaikpet. what's pickup like at closing time
I haven't been to the school, so I can't tell you about the gate itself. I drive through Shaikpet on clinic days and the afternoons there are rarely quick, so allow more time than the map says. I would also ask the school whether there is a place inside where people waiting for pickup can stand, especially once the afternoons get hot again.
1on One bad maths paper, one Dasara dinner, and now my son says maybe commerce
I'm glad that worked for your son. I would be careful about expecting a 16-year-old to answer relatives himself, though. Some children can, and some would feel it as one more test. I think closing the topic is the adults' job, and his job is only to look at the paper.
2on It's dark by 6:15 now and my 12 year old wants to stay at the colony cricket ground till 7
I'm only thinking ahead, with a 7 and a 4 year old, so no experience to offer. I do wonder whether the caregiver's worry is the dark itself or being responsible for it on her watch. If it's the second, you could try the later time first on the days you're home early, so it's clearly your decision and not hers. Would she be more comfortable once she's seen a couple of weeks go smoothly?
0on Hindi homework in class 1 and nobody at home reads Hindi
We went through this with my daughter last year, she's 7 now. We tried a regular tutor in class 1 first. The sessions went on worksheets and the reading didn't move much. Now someone comes twice a week only to read aloud with her, and the homework she does alone, even if it's wrong. The notebooks look worse. Her reading is clearly better. So I wouldn't call a tutor overdoing it. I would be very clear about what you want the tutor to do.
0on Asking for my niece, who is looking at Holy Mothers Grammar School in Malakpet for nursery
I would suggest she ask whether parents may see a nursery class during a normal morning, even for ten minutes. A short look at how teachers settle a crying child tells you more than the brochure. I don't know this school, so I can only suggest the question.
0on Class teacher went on long leave and my 8 year old says the new one 'doesn't like her'
Our older one had a mid-term change in class 1. What helped was asking her each day for one thing the new teacher did that was fine. Not good, just fine. It shifted the conversation a little. Has the school said how long the leave is? Knowing whether the old teacher is coming back changes what you can tell her.
2on Rostered on the Saturday of her class 2 PTM. Is it odd to send her grandfather?
Last year my daughter's UKG meeting clashed for both of us. I wrote to the teacher and asked for a ten minute phone call instead, and she agreed without any fuss. The call turned out more useful than the meeting would have been, because there was no queue behind me. Does your school give individual time slots, or is it an open-house format?
2on Evening football around Bachupally for a 7 year old who mostly wants to run
We are in Madhapur, so I cannot help with places on your side. One thing I would ask anywhere: whether the 6 to 8 year olds play separately from the older children. My daughter left a mixed batch because the bigger boys never passed to her.
1on Partner can't stand the smell of anything cooking. What did you eat for those weeks?
This was me with both pregnancies. What got us through was cold food: curd rice, poha made the night before and eaten cold, fruit, plain toast, buttermilk. Anything hot smelt worse. We also moved the cooking to early morning with every window open and the exhaust on, and my partner ate dinner out more often than he'd like to admit. It did ease off for me after some weeks. Has she been able to keep any particular food down so far?
6on What time does the crowd outside Genius Grammer High School clear in the afternoon?
We're not at this school, but it's worth finding out whether the primary and high school sections finish separately. Current parents would know, and it would tell you whether there's a quiet gap.
0on Six days off with viral fever and my class 10 daughter is already counting attendance
At her age I would have worried about the same thing, though I suspect the missed classwork matters more than the number. Six days is about a week of notes in every subject. Has she been able to get them from someone?
0on Tuition sent my daughter's 'progress report'. The neighbour's son got the same one, word for word
Did you ask the tuition teacher, in person, for one specific thing your daughter does well? The spoken answer is usually far better than the written one. The written one is a form.
0on Partner is on a career break and we still pay a caregiver. Relatives keep asking why
My partner is on a break too, and we kept our helpers. The answer that stopped most of the questions in our family was a plain one: the break is from a job, not a move into full-time childcare. We said it once, calmly, and then repeated the same sentence every time it came up. It doesn't convince everyone. Does your partner want to answer these, or would they rather you took them?
1on any kids' dash at the city runs that a 3 yr old can do
Our son is about that age and we tried a 'family run' at a school fair. He ran the first twenty metres, then sat down to examine a stone. The medal was the only part he remembered. If you do go, the start line in morning sun is harsher than it looks, so a cap helps.
1on Colleagues assume I can take every after-school duty because my partner is a doctor
I agree with stating the time and not the reasons. 'I can take anything that ends by 5.30' is enough. If the rota is a shared sheet, could you write the time limit next to your name when you sign up? It saves you saying it out loud every term.
4on Back at work three weeks, and our 7 month old has started making up for it at night
With my son it lasted about six weeks after I went back to clinic, then slowly dropped to one wake. Is the school close enough for the caregiver to bring him to you at lunch?
3on Moving a state board child into class 8 at Edify World School, Attapur. What changes?
We considered Edify for our elder one's class 1 and dropped it because of the distance from Madhapur, so I have nothing first-hand on the middle school. One thing I'd add to your list is the second language. A state board child's Telugu may not line up with what is offered from class 8, so check which languages they run and at what level. Does your daughter have a preference between Hindi and Telugu?
0on 13 yr old redraws every science record diagram until it's perfect. 3 hours last night
I was this child, with biology diagrams especially. My mother's rule was a pencil draft on a rough sheet first, and only one attempt in the record itself. It felt unfair then. It did teach me that a good diagram and a perfect one take very different amounts of time. Would she accept a rough sheet first?
0on Class 7 rep elections on Friday. Daughter wants me to write her speech, with jokes
I'd go a little further than reading it once. My father wrote my class 8 election speech, word for word, and I lost to a girl who had written her own, badly. I remember being more embarrassed about the speech than the result. If she wants jokes, maybe help her find her own funny line rather than handing her one?
3on Grandson wants to hold the neighbours' new baby every evening
When my son was born my daughter was about three, so a younger age, but what worked was giving her a job before the baby reached her arms. Sit down, put the pillow on your lap, hold your hands ready. By the time she had done all that she was calm and slow. Is he also asking to carry her around the room? That would be the point where I'd say not yet.
1on Caregiver starts next week. Do we put a camera in the living room, and do we tell her?
Before. We raised it in the first meeting along with pay and hours, as a normal part of the arrangement. With no family nearby to drop in, it was our only window into the day, and putting it on the table early made it feel less like suspicion. One person said no thank you, and that was useful to know too.
0on Thinking about Mamata High School in Begumpet for our two, who are a year apart
We looked at schools for both our children in the same season. Most offices we spoke to would only discuss the younger one once the elder was confirmed, so it was really two processes with some overlap. I don't know how Mamata handles it, so that's worth asking in exactly those words when you call.
1on School's optional trip to Himachal before class 10 begins. What should I ask before signing?
My children are much younger, so I have no trip experience to offer. I would want to know about medical arrangements, though: whether a teacher keeps the children's medicines, and whether a nearby hospital is listed for each stop. Is any of that in the circular?
What bothers me is how much is printed on these cards now. Full name, class, school, sometimes a home address and a phone number, on a lanyard round a seven year old's neck. Is that normal everywhere?
