Hindi homework in class 1 and nobody at home reads Hindi

linen_kettle_2388

Daughter is 6, class 1, CBSE. Hindi started this year and the homework is mostly copying letters and matching pictures to words. At home we speak Telugu and English. My Hindi is film Hindi. My partner's is a little better, but most evenings are hospital evenings. The school says the basics are taught in class and the homework is only practice. She still comes home unsure what half the words mean, and I'm guessing along with her. Is a Hindi tutor in class 1 overdoing it? Our son is 16, so I have no memory of how we handled this the first time, which probably says something.

Asking for our future selves here. Our twins are 3, and it's Telugu and English at home for us too. Do schools let you pick Telugu instead of Hindi in class 1, or is Hindi fixed till later? Nobody gave us a straight answer at the nursery visits.

  • We went through this with my daughter last year, she's 7 now. We tried a regular tutor in class 1 first. The sessions went on worksheets and the reading didn't move much. Now someone comes twice a week only to read aloud with her, and the homework she does alone, even if it's wrong. The notebooks look worse. Her reading is clearly better. So I wouldn't call a tutor overdoing it. I would be very clear about what you want the tutor to do.

what does the reading-only person actually do in a session. the textbook or storybooks?

    • the doing-it-alone-even-if-wrong part, yes. my son had a hindi tutor in classes 2 and 3 and his notebook looked like a teacher had written it. because one had 🤷 we stopped and now just read the hindi paper's headlines with him at breakfast. he laughs at my pronunciation but he reads them
