1on Still counting on his fingers for 7 x 8 in class 5. Push the tables, or let it be?
We did tables in the car, like antakshari. I say saat aath, she shouts chhappan, then she asks me one. My mother did the same with me. My daughter's 15 now, so I can't claim it made her a genius, but she never counted on her fingers after class 6 😄
0on 9 messages in the family group today, 3 about whether she needs a cap indoors
Arre wait till she starts walking, then the group discovers socks vs no socks :) We had three months of that with my daughter. Mute button is your friend.
2on First sleepover invite for my 15 year old. Is this normal now?
We said yes for the first time this year. Called the host parents beforehand, just a normal chat: who all are coming, what time pickup is in the morning. Beta was a bit embarrassed that I called, but it settled my mind.
The overlap point is real. My daughter's in class 9 CBSE and her foundation batch has kids from both boards sitting together. The State Board kids mostly chose it for the timings, not because the coaching wanted them. Worth hearing the reasons from your son directly, not just from the friends' parents.
0on class 10 extra classes, 3.30 to 5.30 every day from this week
Same at my daughter's school since last week. Our beti says the extra classes are mostly worksheets from the same teachers she has all day. We've paused tuition for one subject the school is covering anyway. Too early to say if that was right 🙂
2on Anyone with a class 3 child at Sai Bhoopathy High School in Nagole?
Haven't heard about this school specifically. One thing from what I've seen with cousins' kids: ask how many children move to CBSE later, and in which class, because that tells you what most parents there are planning. Baaki, being close to the nana-nani is worth a lot.
2on 11 year old wants to grow his hair long. The school wants it above the collar
Arre, let him try. My daughter fought the 'two plaits only' rule for a whole year in class 7. Lost, of course, but she still talks about it like a war she's proud of 😊
0on Her IB kindergarten doesn't do formal reading. Her cousins her age are reading full sentences
Cousins reading early don't prove much. At that age our daughter could recite three whole books from memory, and the elders were sure she was reading 😊 Ask the cousins to read something they haven't seen before.
0on Is logging every feed and nappy in an app helping us, or just making us more anxious?
We were exactly like this with our daughter, a notebook instead of an app back then. Around six weeks the doctor said she was gaining well and we just stopped. The only things I wish we had kept writing down were vaccination dates and any medicines, because those you need later.
1on Elder son is in class 10 and wants hotel management. Which stream keeps that open?
Ours changes every term, so I'm in no position to advise. Last term vet, this term 'something in films'. Does he cook only on Sundays or would he do it on a school night too? That might tell you something.
2on Daughter has asked me to stop sending her marks to the family group
We did exactly this a few months back. Ba now calls our daughter every Sunday to 'check on studies', and they mostly talk about recipes. Better deal for everyone 🙂
0on vegetable seedlings and grow bags near sainikpuri? 10 yr old wants her own terrace patch
Bhindi did very well on our terrace, beti loved picking them. The cheap grow bags we bought tore after one summer of sun, so pay a little more for the thicker ones. No idea about shops near Sainikpuri though, sorry 🙂
1on Leaving early for a school thing. Do you tell your team the real reason?
'Personal' every time, for me. Not because school is a secret, more that once you explain one, you're expected to explain all of them 🙂
2on Nehru Zoo with a 6 year old before school starts. Is this weather a bad idea?
Walking is the real issue. We took the battery vehicle round once and it saved beta's feet, and mine 🙂 Worth it with a small one.
1on Someone near East Marredpally who fits a proper shade net on a terrace?
Till the fitter comes, try old dupattas on a bamboo pole frame tied low. Our terrace looked like a wedding pandal for a month, but the curry patta and the mint survived. Your daughter can choose the colours, makes it her project too 🙂
Is she set on state board, or open to CBSE nearby as well? Might widen her options if the van doesn't work out 🙂
2on Do schools check where you live for nursery admission, or is 'nearby preferred' just talk?
Travel time is the real thing. Our daughter did 50 minutes each way in nursery and slept through every ride, but by Friday she was a wreck. If you're moving anyway, move closer to whichever school wins 🙂
3on Early-morning things to do around Banjara Hills with a 7 year old, before it gets too hot
When ours was small we did breakfast trips. One old Irani café or tiffin centre each Saturday, and she rated the idli or the bun maska out of ten. It became a whole notebook 😄 Not every day, but it gives the week a shape.
0on Our 4 year old would live on fruit if we let her
Our daughter did exactly this at four. My mother-in-law fixed it with chaas at lunch, big glass with jeera, and somehow the khichdi went down after that. No idea why it worked. She's 14 now and still wants her chaas every afternoon.
0on Hindi or Telugu from class 6? Our son reads Hindi better, and his grandparents are not pleased
We're Gujarati at home and she took Hindi, because Gujarati was never an option at school. She learnt to read Gujarati from her baa during the holidays, slowly, but she did 🙂 So the school choice isn't his only chance.
2on Our 15 year old wants to do nursing, and the first question at home was 'why not MBBS?'
Dikri has wanted four different things since class 8. Last month it was forensics, because of a web series. At 15 I'd let her explore, nothing to lock in yet except keeping biology in class 11.
