Son wants to move to State Board for class 9 so he has 'time for coaching'. His pick is Little Buds in Nallakunta

He's in class 8, CBSE, and doing fine where he is. Two boys from his cricket group are moving to State Board next year, and now he has a full plan: State Board for 9 and 10 because it's 'lighter', evening coaching for JEE foundation, and Little Buds Grammar High School in Nallakunta because one of those boys has an older cousin there. I teach primary, so I know very little about how State Board 9 and 10 work in Hyderabad compared with CBSE. My worry is that he's choosing a school for a strategy he heard at the nets. Has anyone's child made this switch at class 9? And does anyone know Little Buds at the senior end?

Before the school, I'd ask him what 'lighter' means to him, in hours. The boys I know who did State Board plus coaching in 9 and 10 didn't get lighter days, they got longer ones. School till 4, coaching till 8. Ask whether that's the plan he's signing up for. This is from colleagues' kids, mind you. Mine is only in class 6.

That's a good way to put it. He seems to think coaching replaces homework somehow. I'll ask him to write out a weekday as he imagines it. If it has a cricket slot in it, we'll know.

Update for anyone with the same conversation coming up: the weekday he wrote out has school till 4, coaching 5 to 8, and 'cricket on Sundays maybe'. He looked at it for a while without saying much. No decision yet, but Nallakunta has gone from 'the plan' to 'one option'.

Ha, the cricket slot. There was the same chatter in my son's class 8 batch this year, three or four boys talking about switching. One family did it. The others stayed once they compared what CBSE 9 and 10 science covers with what the foundation courses teach. It overlaps a lot more than the boys assumed. Also ask the coaching place itself. Plenty of them take CBSE students without any issue.

The overlap point is real. My daughter's in class 9 CBSE and her foundation batch has kids from both boards sitting together. The State Board kids mostly chose it for the timings, not because the coaching wanted them. Worth hearing the reasons from your son directly, not just from the friends' parents.

From the sibling side: my sister is in class 9 now and a lot of her friends talked about switching boards last year. The ones who moved say the exams weren't the hard part, the change of friends was. Ask your son if both cricket friends are going to the same school. Nallakunta with one of them and a different school for the other makes for a very different year.
