Our 4 year old would live on fruit if we let her

indigo_puzzle_6578

For the last few weeks she has more or less stopped eating rice. Watermelon, muskmelon, banana, grapes, the odd early mango: all fine, big portions. Dal and rice, she takes two spoons and pushes the plate away. She's energetic and not losing weight as far as I can tell. My mother says fruit is 'cold' and she'll fall sick. My partner says let her eat what she wants. Is a fruit-heavy month a problem at this age, or am I overthinking it?

This month our son is no different. I've started putting a little rice next to the fruit plate instead of fruit after the rice. Some days it works.

    • We do something similar with our younger one, and I put curd on the side. He refuses curd rice but will eat curd with mango pieces in it. As long as some protein goes in during the day, I don't worry much.

Same story with my twins, but only one of them. Other one wants only rice and pappu, no fruit at all. So at our home one plate fruit, one plate rice, and they swap half. Every summer they are like this, once the heat goes they come back to normal food.

Our daughter did exactly this at four. My mother-in-law fixed it with chaas at lunch, big glass with jeera, and somehow the khichdi went down after that. No idea why it worked. She's 14 now and still wants her chaas every afternoon.

Our girl had a whole summer like this when she was small. A mango a day and not much else at lunch. She grew up fine, taller than me now. The one thing we watched was water. Fruit kids sometimes forget to drink.

Taller than you is the real result. Mine was a curd-and-banana child for two summers. My mother called it 'summer diet' and nobody worried.

water is a good point. she drinks more from the steel tumbler with a straw than from her bottle, so i've stopped fighting that one too

In Kolkata my grandson also eats only fruits in summer. Mango, lichu, jamrul. I give him little rice with dal and alu sheddho at night, then fruit after. We are shifting to Kondapur this month so everything is new for us. Fruit is good, but little rice also needed, I think.
