1on Did an inventory of the baby stuff. Four of some things, no car seat
seventeen years ago we came home from the hospital in an auto with him on my lap. not saying that was right. just that if i did it again, the car seat is the one thing i'd buy first, and i'd stop at three swaddles.
4on What should the person staying at the hospital pack for themselves?
my partner lived in the same shirt for two days. what i remember most is that the phone charger cable didn't reach the chair. get a long one
1on Teenage son asked me to teach him to shave. I've had a beard since college
my son learnt from his cousin at a wedding. hotel bathroom, borrowed razor, came out with two small cuts and very pleased with himself. i didn't know until the photos. the asking you quietly in the car part is the nice bit, i think
2on My 11 year old needs to start using deodorant and won't discuss it
we never had the conversation, in the end. i put one in the bathroom cupboard next to his toothbrush and didn't say anything. a month later it was half used and neither of us mentioned it. he's 17 now and still buys the same one.
3on Son has one offer from campus placements and wants to wait for a better company
my son's a few years away from this. reading it, i keep thinking the part i'd find hardest is letting him make the call even if i'd make a different one
3on Pre-nursery at the school where I teach, or one near home?
a lot of staff at my school have their kids on campus. the commute part works well for most of them. what gets hard is the days you have meetings or assessment work after school and the little one is done at 12.30 and waiting for you
1on IB final year plus SAT coaching on weekends, or let the SAT go?
my son's in the same year. we decided against weekend coaching and he does one full practice test a month on his own instead. no idea yet if that was the right call. the IA deadlines this term are the real squeeze, more than the EE
1on Our caregiver is leaving at the end of the month. How did you overlap a replacement?
when he was little the woman who looked after him moved away and we told him early. it helped him say goodbye properly. he's nearly done with school now and still asks about her sometimes
0on Would a later bedtime for our 3 year old cost me our 6 am hour together?
my son's 16 and we still have an early tea together on the days he has first period. it started almost exactly like this. no advice really, just that it's worth protecting if you can.
4on Our toddler has posted two spoons and the TV remote through the balcony grill
mine dropped my car keys from the fifth floor at about that age. we put a clear acrylic sheet along the bottom half of the grill, tied on with cable ties, no drilling. the landlord didn't notice for two years
2on Back at work and the office 'feeding room' is a storeroom with a chair in it
go to facilities, not hr. hr agreed to the room in principle, facilities are the ones who can fit a lock and clear out the monitors. put it in an email so there's a date on it. a few months is still worth fixing, and the next person will thank you
2on Home after midnight again, and my toddler now reaches past me for my partner
the bath idea is a good one. when mine was small the morning school run was 'mine' and it mattered more than all the weekends where i tried too hard
2on Is class 9 at Oxford Grammar School, Himayatnagar, regular school or school plus coaching?
never been inside this one. i work in schools though, and the brochure and the timetable are two different documents. the bit after lunch on the timetable is usually where the 'foundation' lives, if there is one
1on Son told his class I 'work inside people's mouths'. Two of them opened wide for me at pickup
That's lovely. My son once told his kindergarten teacher that I 'go to meetings and say no'. It took me years to live that down at that school.
1on Daughter's first offer letter has a two-year service bond. Is that standard now?
my cousin signed one at 22 and left at 18 months for a master's. paid it from her savings and called it the most expensive lesson she ever had in reading the small print. no regrets about the job though
i see these reports come in from parents at work sometimes. the first thing i ask is which grade level they're measuring against, because it's rarely the board the child is studying in. a lot of it is pitched at a different syllabus.
0on son wants a bike for second year. the college bus takes 70 minutes each way
we've started the same conversation and his 18th is still a year away. what helped a little was my son doing the route on the back of his uncle's bike once in the rain and coming back quieter. didn't settle anything, but the arguing got more honest after that
0on New van route, and our class 4 daughter is now the first pickup at 6.35
routes at our school get drawn from the farthest stop inwards, so first pickup is usually whoever lives at the edge. sometimes a five minute walk to the next stop changes the whole morning. see where the second stop is
1on class 12 timetable has no games period at all. she played basketball three days a week
not dumb. our son is in a heavy year too and we've kept his swimming, two evenings. it's the only time he isn't thinking about exams. the hours didn't come out of studying, they came out of the phone
1on Our 4 month old gets excited at the phone ringtone, including when it's a loan agent
that's exactly it. my son still perks up at one ringtone, his grandmother's. he's sixteen and would deny it
3on Placement letter came in March. Since then the relatives have been sending 'profiles'
we're years off with my son, but i watched my cousin go through this. what worked for her parents wasn't a line. they replied to every forwarded biodata with a photo of her new office id card. no comment, just the photo. the aunts got bored.
1on her whole friend group thinks she's the expert on periods because i'm an obstetrician
i work with kids this age and the one who becomes 'the one who knows' usually enjoys it a bit. she probably felt very grown up that evening. i'd let her keep some of that while you correct the rest.
no board at that age isn't unusual. plenty of early years setups follow their own framework, or something adapted from one. the useful question is what it's called and whether they'll show you a sample week. if the answer stays vague, that's an answer of its own
3on teenager wants to do a lifeguard course. is that a thing here?
the one he's found says cpr and first aid are part of it, with a separate card. that's what sold me
1on class 3 book list says cover all 23 books in brown paper AND plastic. by monday
most stationery shops near schools will do it in a day if you drop the books off in the morning. i've done it myself exactly once. the plastic won
