Our toddler has posted two spoons and the TV remote through the balcony grill

We are on the fourth floor. The gaps in the grill are wide enough for her hand, and she has discovered that things go through and disappear, which is apparently the best game there is. The remote landed in a planter on the first floor and the neighbour returned it, smiling. The spoons we never found. What did you put along the bottom of your grill? Netting, acrylic, something else? We rent, so anything that doesn't need drilling would be ideal.

mine dropped my car keys from the fifth floor at about that age. we put a clear acrylic sheet along the bottom half of the grill, tied on with cable ties, no drilling. the landlord didn't notice for two years

    • Cable ties is exactly what I needed to hear. Did the acrylic hold up through the rains, or go cloudy after a while?

Check what's under your balcony as well. Ours was over the parking, and one day a steel tumbler landed on a neighbour's car bonnet. That conversation cost more than the netting.

Fine-mesh balcony net works too and costs less than acrylic, tied on, no drilling. Make sure it's the fine kind though. Bird netting has gaps a spoon goes straight through, which we found out the hard way.
