2on Nursery next June ends at 12.30, right when she naps. Keep daycare for the afternoons?
From memory, with my son: the nap moved, but the real problem was the transfer. Asleep in the car, woken at the daycare door, cranky for the whole afternoon. If the daycare is close to the school it matters much less.
1on Anyone with a child in LKG at Bhashyam, Meerpet? We may move to that side next year
Ask whether the LKG section sits in the same building as the senior classes, and how pickup works for the small ones. Separate gates and staggered timings make a real difference at three. I would also ask how many adults are in an LKG classroom, not just how many children.
3on What happens at the 'child interaction' for KG admission?
It varied considerably between the schools we applied to, and I would not assume they mean the same thing by the word. At one it was a group of children playing while two teachers watched; at another my daughter was asked to name colours and count blocks. I asked each admissions office directly what the format was and roughly how long it lasted. Most answered when asked in writing, even when the brochure said nothing.
0on Class 10 daughter wants Saturday video-call study sessions with friends. Useful or mostly social?
I would ask her, after the first Saturday, what exactly they did: which chapter, who explained what, how long. If the answer is specific, it is probably working. If it is "we studied", you have your answer. In my experience with students the groups that work usually have a plan written before they meet. The chatting is fine either way.
0on class 9 son explains every maths answer perfectly. the chatbot explained it first
Among my students I see two groups: those who ask for an explanation after attempting a problem, and those who ask before. The second group struggles in exams. Ask him to show you what he tried before he asked. That tells you which group he is in.
1on Saturday class near Alwal for a preschooler where parents aren't expected to stay?
I'm not near Alwal, so no names from me. When my children were that age, the classes that allowed drop-off were usually the ones in a fixed room with a gate or a lobby: art studios and gymnastics more often than music or swimming. Ask each place what the parents of the regular children do during the hour. If they say most wait outside, that is your answer, whatever the brochure says.
1on Class 9 son wants my work-from-home desk every evening. Who gets the quiet room?
What does your evening look like at 8.30? If the calls are on fixed nights, split by time rather than by room. Our eldest took over my study last year, and what worked was a timetable on the door: hers till 8 on my call days, all evening on the others. She grumbled, then started saving the hard subjects for the free nights.
0on Asking about nursery at Siddartha High School for a hospital colleague who works nights
If she does manage a visit, I would suggest asking to see a nursery classroom near the end of the day rather than in the morning. The morning view is the tidy one. What the room looks like at 12.30 tells you more about how many children there are for each adult.
1on Home after midnight again, and my toddler now reaches past me for my partner
It swung back for me, though not on any timeline I could plan around. During the year I was finishing a large grant, my younger one went to whoever was in the house at bedtime, and for a while that was not me. Once the deadline passed it took perhaps two months before he came to me for comfort again. The thing I would avoid is competing for him in the moment. Let him go to your partner when he is hurt, and be the person for something small and regular, like the bath or the first book of the morning.
2on My 12 year old wants half an hour after school where nobody asks her anything
Not well yet. Current attempt: he gets my full attention for those thirty minutes, so he isn't camped at her door. It works when I'm home. Two days a week I'm still at work at that hour.
1on Is it worth asking a new client to fix workshop days so daycare pickup isn't a guess?
Before choosing, I would put the monthly extended plan next to what the late-pickup fee for four evenings would come to. Some daycares price the occasional late day so that the monthly plan looks sensible, and it may not be. On fixed days: I once asked for two fixed teaching slots in a semester and nobody remembered I had asked a month later. People notice the request far less than you expect.
1on Weekend puzzle or maths club near Kokapet for a 7 year old who finishes classwork first
Before signing up anywhere, ask what a normal session involves minute by minute. Several places that advertise 'logic' or 'thinking skills' turn out to be worksheet booklets with a different cover. My son did one for a term at about that age, and the only good part was the last fifteen minutes, when the instructor put one hard problem on the board and let them argue about it. If a centre lets you sit in on a session, that tells you more than any brochure.
2on monsoon day trip within 2 hrs of mehdipatnam, with a toddler and an older one
Think about the shape of the day before the place. An hour each way, one walk, lunch, back. When ours were small, the outings that worked had shade and a clean toilet; the view was a bonus.
1on Two preschools asked 'is the mother working?' before telling me anything
Often it is a proxy for 'will someone be free at 12.30'. I would answer with the real arrangement: who picks up, who is the emergency contact, what happens on a late day. Then see whether they adjust. The schools that kept talking about mothers after that were the ones we crossed off.
1on Our shop manager lives near Wesley and asked me to find out about nursery at Allen Primary School
One practical suggestion: write his three questions on a sheet and have him take it to the office in the first hour after classes start, when it is quieter. Offices tend to answer written questions more fully. He could also ask whether nursery children use the same entrance as the older classes; at that age it makes a difference at drop-off.
1on Our 2 year old now says 'cheers' and clinks cups before every sip of milk
Enjoy it. Mine went from clinking everything at two to leaving the room whenever anyone says cheers at eleven.
3on 10 yr old back from a month with his cousins. new vocabulary, some of it not ok
A short, flat 'not in this house' worked better for us than a long talk. The long talk made the word interesting. Whichever you choose, it helps if both parents react the same way.
2on Class 8 summer reading includes a novel I'm not sure she's ready for
Read it yourself first, or at least the chapters you're worried about. A summary online is not the same as the book. And ask the English teacher what the discussion will focus on. If it's about how war affects ordinary families, that changes how I'd prepare her. If they're simply going chapter by chapter, I'd want to know.
3on 13 and he's outgrown everything since Diwali. He won't come shopping with me
We give our daughter a list and a budget and let her go round the store with a friend while I sit in the café next door. She sends photos from the trial room. It costs me an extra hour, but there's no fight.
1on my 12 yr old has started asking what things cost, and then saying no to them himself
Our elder one went through this at about the same age. It faded once we gave her a small monthly amount to manage herself. She had a real number to think about, instead of every price being a vague worry.
1on Anyone done a summer childcare swap with another working family? Two 8 year olds, alternate days
I'd want to know what happens on the first day one of the boys says he doesn't want to go to the other house. With my two, the swaps that worked had a fixed exit, say three weeks with a review, so nobody felt trapped and nobody had to give a reason to stop.
1on What should our caregiver ask St Anthony Middle School in Nallakunta about class 1?
That's useful, thank you. The release time matters more for her than the start time, since a neighbour would be doing the pickup. I'll add it to the list.
