Class 8 summer reading includes a novel I'm not sure she's ready for

Her ICSE school sent a summer reading list for class 8. Most of it is fine. One is a war novel with some fairly graphic chapters, and it's marked for discussion when school reopens. She's 12 and reads a lot, so it isn't the difficulty. It's the content. Do I let her read it and talk about it with her, or ask the school whether there's an alternative?

I'd rather not name it here, but it's a well-known one set in the Second World War. Your dinner questions are what I'm hoping for. I'll read it this week first, as the other comment says, and then decide.

Read it yourself first, or at least the chapters you're worried about. A summary online is not the same as the book. And ask the English teacher what the discussion will focus on. If it's about how war affects ordinary families, that changes how I'd prepare her. If they're simply going chapter by chapter, I'd want to know.
