Our shop manager lives near Wesley and asked me to find out about nursery at Allen Primary School

My partner's business is in Abids, and our store manager, who has been with us for years, lives a few lanes from Wesley. His son will be ready for nursery next year and he walks past Allen Primary School every day, so that is where he would like to start. He is not on any parent groups and is a little shy about walking in to ask. His questions are simple: from what age they take nursery children, what hours the little ones keep, and do the small children have a separate area. I have told him I can only pass on what people share here and that he should still visit. Anything from parents who have looked at the school would help.

no idea about this school, sorry. but it's kind of you to ask for him. walking in is harder than people think when nobody in your family has done school admissions before

One practical suggestion: write his three questions on a sheet and have him take it to the office in the first hour after classes start, when it is quieter. Offices tend to answer written questions more fully. He could also ask whether nursery children use the same entrance as the older classes; at that age it makes a difference at drop-off.

I have no experience of Allen, but we are doing nursery enquiries for our younger one this year. The question I keep wishing I had asked at the first few schools is what happens on the mornings a three-year-old cries at the gate: do the teachers take the child in, or send the parent home with them?

Schools in that part of Abids that run from nursery to class 10 sometimes keep the small children in a separate block or floor, but it varies, so it is worth seeing rather than assuming. The daily walk past is a real advantage for a three-year-old, more than people give it credit for.

Not at nursery stage yet, ours is still a baby. But my mother once got our helper's son a seat by simply going with her one morning and doing the talking. Maybe you or your partner could go along with him the first time, if he's hesitant.

We are a year or two away from this ourselves, so I am reading these threads for our own sake. Does anyone know whether schools around there ask for the child to come for a nursery interaction, or is it a form and a visit? I am asking for us as much as for him.

if he walks past it every day he's already done the most useful research. dispersal time, how the small ones come out, whether the parents waiting look relaxed or harried. the rest is a form
