1on Landlord wants our renewal answer before Diwali, with a baby on the way
We moved house when our daughter was about three months old. Hard, but easier than I expected, because she slept through most of the packing and I wasn't the one lifting anything. Moving while pregnant I'd avoid unless family can come and help. Six months where you are, then the move, sounds sensible to me.
6on daughter's choosing between a master's abroad and one here, and i don't know what to ask
We asked the course-level question last year and it was worth it. The website talked about thousands of international students. Her actual course had six. Not a reason to say no, but it changed how she thought about the first month. She hasn't fully decided either, so I'm reading this thread with interest.
2on grandson may move to stamford grammar in shaikpet. what's pickup like at closing time
When my daughter was around that age, what lasted was one message from whoever did pickup and a call only if something was off. The separate check-in calls usually come from each parent feeling they should be the one who knows. Once they trust the message, it stops.
0on What should the person staying at the hospital pack for themselves?
Keep a separate folder with the ID cards, the insurance papers and the doctor's file, not buried in the clothes. My daughter is twenty-two now and that's still the one thing I'd tell anyone. You'll be asked for those papers at the worst possible moment.
0on Daycare says my 18 month old 'won't sit for circle time'. Is she supposed to?
This was a long time ago, my daughter is in college now. At her playschool the toddlers who sat through circle time were the exception. Her teacher once told me the walkers usually listen anyway, they just do it moving. I'd ask what they want instead of the walking: sitting, or just staying in the room?
3on Small neighbourhood school to a big campus like The Premia Academy at 10. How did yours cope?
My daughter moved from a small school to a much bigger one at about that age. She was very quiet for the first term and I worried. By the second term she had found two or three girls she still talks to. The size of the campus bothered her far less than the bus ride did.
2on What house rules still apply to a 22 year old living at home?
Mostly the food, though my partner wouldn't have put it that way. We've tried 'tell us by six' for two days now. On Thursday she forgot. Yesterday the message came at 5.50 with a thumbs-up and a photo of the canteen menu. Small steps 🙂

That split is useful. My partner and I have been arguing about the 'only affects her' list without realising it was a list. Did the car turn into a problem? She has started asking for it on weekends.
1on School pickup rota with two other families keeps breaking on the same family's day
I'd do it in person first, not on the group with dates. In a group it reads like a charge sheet even when it isn't meant that way.
1on Our office wants to donate books to a school in the old city. Iqra Mission High School came up
Falaknuma side is not far from us. A practical point: getting cartons delivered in those lanes is hard in the mornings, so fix a time with the school and come in a smaller vehicle. And go once yourself before the drive, have a chai with whoever handles it. It makes the rest easier.
This was some years ago now, so things may have changed, but when our daughter moved schools the preschool wouldn't give a report either. In the end they agreed to a short letter on their letterhead saying she was enrolled and attending regularly, and the school accepted that along with the previous year's report. It might be worth asking your preschool for a letter rather than a report, since that's a smaller thing to agree to.
3on Offered a lead role, but the 8 am calls start before our caregiver arrives
Ask before you accept, definitely. I negotiated a 9.30 start when I took my first manager role. Nobody had ever asked, so nobody had ever said no.
1on How heavy is the foundation coaching for class 9 at Sri Chaitanya, Cherlapalli?
Years ago our daughter went through a school with weekly tests in 9 and 10. What helped her was knowing which tests counted and which were only practice, so she didn't treat every Saturday like a board exam. If he goes there, sit with him and sort that out early.
0on Four years of hostel, and now our daughter calls our flat 'your house'
The shelf is a good thought. Her old room has quietly become where the ironing goes, which I hadn't noticed until reading this. Clearing it this weekend and letting her decide what goes back in.
0on At every check-up the paediatrician explains things to my mother, not to me
It's not only fathers. When my daughter was small my sasubai came along and I got the same treatment, and I'm the mother! Doctors read the oldest person in the room as the one in charge. I started taking the chair nearest the doctor and putting the file on the desk in front of me. Sounds silly; it worked.
2on A colleague moving to LB Nagar asked me about Krishnaveni Talent School for his daughter's class 1
My daughter had a couple of friends from there in junior college, but that was years back and tells you very little about class 1 now. What helped us most with schools on this side was going at dismissal time and talking to two or three parents at the gate. Your colleague could do that in one afternoon.
6on Final semester, nearly four years of hostel, and she called to ask how long to boil an egg
That's exactly what she said when I laughed. She sent a photo later: one perfect, one cracked and leaking. She's calling it a 50% success rate.
In my time this would have needed a family meeting. My partner did the evenings with our daughter when she was small, and my aaji was certain the baby would forget me. She didn't. The grandparents came round once they saw the baby was thriving. Give them a role in the plan, not just an opinion about it.
1on grandson has decided i need an afternoon nap. he puts me to sleep now
Enjoy every one of these. Our daughter used to do this to her ajoba with a bedsheet and a story she made up as she went along. She's finishing college now, and he still tells it at every family function.
We're in Bandlaguda Jagir, not far from there. A neighbour's grandson goes to Sagarika and he seems happy enough, but that's the extent of what I know. Hope the flat works out.
1on Anyone done a summer childcare swap with another working family? Two 8 year olds, alternate days
A fixed end date is the bit I'd underline. Years ago we did a school-holiday swap with neighbours for a 'whole summer' and it ended awkwardly in week four over something small. A planned stop would have saved everyone's pride.
