0on 1 year old feeds herself at home. At daycare she's spoon-fed and 'eats very little'
From the other side of a classroom (older children, but the same arithmetic): one adult with six or eight toddlers at lunch means spoon-feeding is how everyone gets fed before nap time. If you do ask, offer something that doesn't add work, like sending finger food already cut small in her own box, so all they have to do is put it in front of her.
1on IB till grade 10, then the Diploma or an intermediate college? Our 14 year old hasn't a clue yet
I teach maths, and my son is in DP year 1 now, so I can only tell you what it looks like from inside one house. The DP workload is steady rather than spiky: internal assessments, the extended essay, CAS, all running alongside the subjects. It's very hard to add serious entrance coaching on top of that. Some students try and most end up doing one of the two badly. So the real question for your daughter isn't IB versus state board in the abstract. It's whether she wants to sit Indian entrance exams in 2029. If yes, an intermediate college is built for exactly that. If she wants options across India and abroad and isn't drawn to the exam track, the DP makes more sense. Since she mentions biology: NEET is the exam where DP content and the exam pattern sit furthest apart. I'd find out whether she's drawn to medicine itself before choosing a board for it.
2on Thinking about St. Anns Model School in Nacharam for nursery. Does State Board this early matter?
For a nursery child the choice is less permanent than it feels. The two syllabi run fairly close in the early years; the gap in maths becomes noticeable somewhere around class 6 to 8. The more practical question is which board you can support at home, and find help for nearby later if needed. At three, the teachers and the daily routine will matter far more than the label.
1on First pregnancy at 41 and the family has decided I should stop working
I taught through my pregnancy, and the family pressure was mostly about standing all day. It helped to show them what my day really looked like, which periods I could sit through and which I couldn't. They had been imagining something much harder. The downside was that it invited a lot of suggestions about my timetable.
2on Class teacher went on long leave and my 8 year old says the new one 'doesn't like her'
As a teacher: the first couple of weeks with a new class are hard for the teacher too. She probably doesn't know yet who likes to read aloud. If your daughter wants to be picked, it usually works better if she tells the teacher herself than if a parent mentions it.
2on Daughter wants to go into UX research, like me. What would she even study for it?
From the students I've taught, the ones who moved towards this area did it through design or psychology degrees, and a couple through computer science. A decent level of maths helped all of them more than they expected. I wouldn't push her to pick the final label yet.
As a maths teacher I have seen a fair number of IB to CBSE moves. At class 1 the gap is mostly the amount of written practice, not the concepts. Children who read well usually catch up with the writing within a term.
0on first year son wants a two-wheeler for college. we're in uppal
I'd ask what the bus is costing him. If the last convenient bus means he skips labs or project groups, that's a real reason. If it's mainly that his friends ride, that's a different conversation.
0on Back to outstation demos and I feel like a guest at my baby's bedtime
That feeling eased for me once there was one thing that stayed mine regardless of travel. In our case it was the morning bath; whoever did bedtime, the bath was me. It didn't fix the bedtime part, but it stopped me feeling like a visitor.
2on A toddler at my branch today tried to deposit his biscuit at the cash counter
Did he get a receipt? Mine at that age posted my car keys into the society letterbox at the gate. Took two days to find the person with the key.
3on gitanjali begumpet goes nursery to 12. did families who started in nursery stay all the way?
I partly agree. The one thing worth checking early is how a school handles the move into the senior classes, because that is where families tend to leave if they are going to: subject choices, which streams are offered after 10. You don't need to decide anything now, but if the nursery choice is close between two schools, it's a fair tie-breaker.
Teacher here, and this is a common request. Admissions teams generally understand that preschool reports are annual and accept whatever was last issued, plus a note. A letter confirming enrolment, as suggested, is a reasonable thing to ask for. I'd write to both schools now and explain, rather than wait and send something they weren't expecting.
0on What should I check before my 13 year old joins an outdoor climbing group?
It looked organised from the path on a dry day. I would want to know what they do in this season. Wet granite is a different thing and a decent group should be able to tell you exactly when they cancel. My son climbed indoors for about a year and the one rule his instructors never bent was no outdoor sessions after rain.
1on Daughters timed me eating dinner after a shift. Four minutes, ten seconds
Teachers are not far behind. Our lunch break is 25 minutes and half of it goes to someone standing at the staffroom door. I would fail your daughters' test too.
I work on curriculum, so this is the first thing I'd do: the state board textbooks for the early classes are published online by the state education department, so you can read the class 1 and 2 books before visiting anywhere. Count how many written exercises there are per chapter and how much copying they expect. That will tell you more than any one family's evenings.
3on Our 14 year old has quietly dropped his oldest friend, and the friend's mother called me
The adult side is the harder part, I think. If you and his mother have been close, tell her plainly that there was no fight and you're not encouraging this, but you also can't choose his friends. That keeps your own friendship out of the boys' drift.
0on Class 2 sum marked wrong because he added the tens first
Both are valid. At class 2 the teacher is probably checking the column method specifically, because that is what was taught that week, not whether he can add. I'd ask what the sheet was testing before deciding anything.
1on Signed up to speak at my daughter's class 8 career morning. She has asked me not to mention blood
I've sat through a lot of these as a teacher. The children who squirmed most were the ones whose parent talked about them: baby stories, 'my daughter always says'. Leave her out of it entirely and she'll relax. Describe one ordinary day hour by hour and leave time for questions. A stethoscope they can use on each other would be a hit, and no blood involved. Show her the plan the night before, not the whole talk.
4on Two levels left in abacus after four years, and she wants to stop now
Speaking as a maths teacher: abacus builds speed with arithmetic, and she has most of that by now. The last two levels add more speed, not much new understanding. If she wants to draw, I wouldn't hold her to it for a certificate.
3on My housekeeper's 2 year old comes with her on Saturdays now. What should I keep at home for him?
Steel vessels and a wooden spoon kept my son busy longer than any toy did at that age. Also a box of large wooden blocks. Nothing with small parts, and nothing that needs an adult sitting with him, since his mother will be working.
Something to think about early, since the school goes all the way to class 10: you'd be choosing a place for possibly twelve years for a child who isn't two yet. That can be a good thing, no admissions again, or it can make it harder to move later if it doesn't suit him. We went back and forth on this for a long time and I'm still not sure we chose for the right reasons.
0on Took my grandson to the planetarium. His review: the seats go back
The samosa outlasts the science every time. Mine is 15 and the one thing he mentions from his primary school trip to the zoo is the lunch.
0on For a class 6 joiner at ARCA Global in Boduppal, does it matter that the school ends at class 10?
Ending at 10 is less of a problem than it sounds. Class 6 is a good point to join, before the middle school content gets heavier. The real tradeoff I'd look at is the commute, if he's going to be with you on some school days. Boduppal is a long way from Kompally.
3on Forty minutes between getting home and bedtime, and both kids want all of them
What helped me on late days was dropping the idea of an activity and just being on the floor with them. At that age my son mostly wanted me in the room while he did his own thing. He's 15 now and still wanders into the kitchen when I'm cooking, for the same reason.
2on used most of my leave on daycare sick days and it's only may
Teachers can't work from home, so in my son's first daycare year I took half days wherever I could: mornings with him, afternoons at school. Messier than full days, but the leave lasted twice as long. Worth checking whether your policy allows half days.
