1on Class 12 daughter says our reminders are the reason she can't concentrate
I teach at a CBSE school, so I'm answering from the other side of the table. Parents asking about workload is completely normal and most teachers would rather hear it in October than in February. A specific question works best. Ask for the test calendar for the next two months and roughly how long the daily homework is meant to take. Then the house has something to go by other than guessing. Also, if she's in class 12, she probably knows her own backlog better than anyone. A once-a-day check at a fixed time might land better than lots of small ones.
1on Weekend drama or theatre class for a 7 year old around Masab Tank?
Thank you, mixed ages is fine as long as the younger ones get proper parts and aren't only trees in the background. Please do post if you find out.
1on School and tuition teach class 12 accounts formats differently. Which one does the board accept?
Not commerce myself, but I'm a teacher at a CBSE school. From what our accounts colleagues say, they correct strictly against the marking scheme, and the board's sample papers show the format they expect. Have her compare both versions against those. Saves a lot of arguing 😄
4on Settling-in period for pre-nursery at Neo School Aizza in Malakpet?
Masab Tank to Malakpet isn't far for us, but I don't know this school inside. Teacher hat on though: find out the number of adults per pre-nursery room. At two, that matters more than almost anything else.
4on Aunts have started sending saffron so the baby comes out 'fair'
The biryani line is perfect. My mother tried this with my partner and I made the mistake of explaining the science out loud at a family lunch. Took two years to live down 😂
0on 9 month old has refused solids for five days while two top teeth come in
Ours did this with the molars, closer to a year and a half. About a week, then she ate like she was making up for it. The every-hour offering made her angrier, I think. We went back to meal times only and stopped watching every spoon.
2on My 8 year old wants to draw like me. Art class, or just sketch together on weekends?
One thing we did before signing up for a class for our daughter: asked to see work from children who had been there two years, not the display board by the door. The display board is all the best pieces. The two-year work tells you what they actually teach. We said no to two places this way.
0on Caregiver has started taking my son to her home on my late on-call evenings
I'd take it as a good sign that he's comfortable there, and still set one rule: a message when they leave your house and another when they're back. And go over with him once on a weekend, so you can picture the place when your phone is quiet. Kids that age will happily give you the full tour 😄
4on Study group call last night. 50 minutes on the group name, 10 on chemistry
Same thing in class group work. Ten minutes on the team name, the poster gets made in the last five. The name is non-negotiable though, it's half the fun for them.
0on she eats everything for the nanny and almost nothing when i'm home
Very much a thing. I see the school version of it every day: children who 'never eat at home' finish their whole box in class because nobody is watching them chew. Forty minutes is a long time to be watched. Put her plate down, eat your own food next to her and don't comment at all. It felt odd the first few times we tried it with ours, but it did more than any coaxing.
0on Marathi is a graded subject from class 3 and we only speak it a little at home
As a teacher I'd second the reading-ahead part. One more: ask the language teacher which words they expect children to know by heart this term. It's usually a much shorter list than the textbook suggests.
0on Daycare shut at 7.30 am because the lane was waterlogged. Does anyone's daycare give more notice?
Schools have the same problem. A closure depends on whether staff can get in, not only the lane. That's often why the call comes so late: they're waiting to hear from the teachers. Ask the daycare what time they decide and who decides. Knowing that helped us.
2on Every visitor for the baby brings sweets, and I can't stop judging other people's laddoos
Or skip the colony and send them to a school staffroom. Teachers will finish nine boxes before the second bell, and nobody will ask about the ghee 😄
1on Asking about nursery at Javid Mission High School, Falaknuma, on behalf of my clinic assistant
Not this school specifically, but as a teacher: tell her to go in person in the first or second week and carry the birth certificate and Aadhaar, plus photocopies. School offices in June are chaotic, but that's also when they have the forms in hand and the staff to answer questions. Waiting till July sometimes means hearing "come back next year".
0on Daycare wants an 'admission fee' to move him up to their pre-nursery, in the same building
Good thing to ask. From the school side, we don't ask where a nursery child was before, or whether they went anywhere at all. Pre-nursery isn't a requirement where I teach. Whether it helps a child settle is another matter, and that depends more on the child than on the label.
0on Pulled elbow from the 'one two three, swing' game. How do I stop the relatives without a scene?
The swing game was my daughter's favourite thing at that age, so I sympathise with the cousins a bit too! What worked in our family was offering the swing in a different way. Hold her under the arms and swing, or do the aeroplane on your shins. The uncles still get their big moment and nobody has to be told off.
1on Does a 9 year old need a desk? Mine studies flat on the floor and his marks are fine
I teach, and I'd gently correct one thing: the floor itself is rarely the problem. The sloping usually comes from the notebook sitting at an angle and the wrist resting on nothing, which happens on a bad table too. If he writes on a clipboard on the floor, you may get most of the benefit without the fight 😄
3on Can she get through ICSE class 9 and 10 with a senior's old books?
Can confirm, from the teacher side. Children accept everything more easily from a teacher than from their father. My own daughter checks my answers with her class teacher before she believes them.
6on How much homework comes home in class 1 at Kakatiya Techno School, Moula Ali?
Can't comment on this school. Speaking as a teacher, I'd add one question to your list: what happens when homework isn't done. That tells you more about the evenings than the amount does. In some schools it's a line in the diary, in others the child loses break time.
0on Sat through a full morning of sessions with a pink butterfly clip in my hair
Keep it in the bag. Mine did a 'hairstyle' on me at that age and I've been the class teacher with two tiny clips at least twice. The kids in my class noticed in about four seconds, so you got off lightly.
