Can she get through ICSE class 9 and 10 with a senior's old books?

mellow_rain_9072

Our daughter's class 9 starts this month. A girl from our building who has just finished class 10 offered her entire set of books, most of them clean, some with very good margin notes. Our daughter is not keen. She says the school has 'new editions' and she will be the only one with old books. The school list does mention editions for a few titles, though not all. Has anyone used a senior's books through ICSE class 9 and 10? Did the edition differences matter in practice, or is this more about not wanting to look different?

It may help to put the two lists side by side first. If the only change is the year printed on the cover, the old books will do. If a chapter has been added or a prescribed literature text has changed, that particular book would need to be new. A mix of old and new might also be easier for her to accept.

This takes me back. I used my dada's books for two years in school and the margin notes were half my education. Some of his comments about the teachers were not meant for me. I'd let her choose: new for the ones she cares about, old for the rest.

we're IB so hardly any textbooks, but i bought new grade 3 readers for my son because he cried over someone else's name scribbled inside the cover. sometimes it's about that and not the edition at all

The name inside the cover thing is real. My daughter borrowed a cousin's NCERT books last year and covered every name with stickers before she would open them. Once nobody could tell they were second-hand, she stopped caring :)

I teach at a degree college, and the students with older editions do just as well. Content barely moves in a year. My son used a neighbour's books for class 9 and 10, CBSE though, not ICSE. The only real problem was the workbooks with answers already filled in. Those you must buy new.

That is a useful distinction. Two books on her list are workbooks, so those will be new regardless. I will show her your point about content; she may accept it more easily from a teacher than from her father.

      Replying to @mellow_rain_9072

Can confirm, from the teacher side. Children accept everything more easily from a teacher than from their father. My own daughter checks my answers with her class teacher before she believes them.
