She's in class 10 and has already decided: no entrance coaching, just a regular BSc

3on tumbling class for 4 year olds wants the full term paid before a single session
The trial matters. My daughter at 4 tried a dance class once, cried, and refused to go back. Two years later she asked to join the same class herself. At that age a full term upfront is a gamble, swalpa careful.
0on Would a basic smartwatch for work alerts keep my phone off the dinner table?
Tried it. The watch buzzed and I looked at it every time, same as the phone 😊 My daughter, who was 10 then, called it "the small phone". It helped a bit, mostly because I couldn't type replies on it.
2on Class 12 son is revising the same chapters twice, in two different orders
As someone who makes revision plans at a school (not his), I'd add one thing: tell the class teacher. In our school we sometimes accept a student's coaching notes for a chapter if they cover the same ground, only nobody asks. Not every school will agree but one conversation is worth it, swalpa relief sigutte.
0on My 4 year old plays school and she's doing my classroom voice
Wait till she starts correcting your grammar 😊 Mine did it at 6 and still does it at 16. As a teacher myself I'm told daily that I'm 'using teacher voice at home'.
2on IB final year plus SAT coaching on weekends, or let the SAT go?
We are CBSE, so different system, but I've watched my senior students do coaching plus board prep in the final year for many years. Most of them said the last two months were the problem, not the first. So swalpa check when the SAT date falls against his mocks before deciding 🙂
2on Vedic maths classes for an 8 year old. Faster at what, exactly?
Same thing I see in my school. To be fair, some kids who enjoy these tricks just like numbers more afterwards. If she's into puzzles it won't hurt. Only don't pay for the 10x promise 🙂
0on Class 11 son says he wants to study pure maths, not engineering. Where does that path lead?
I teach in a CBSE school, so I see one or two of these every year 🙂 The ones I know either went for BSc or BS-MS courses through the research institutes' entrance exams, or did a regular BSc and an MSc after. One is in finance now, one does data work, one is doing a PhD. Teaching is not the only door, it's just the one relatives mention. Let him talk to someone who has studied it, that helps more than any list.
2on Daycare wants each parent to spend one morning a month in the baby room. I'm on the road most weeks
Speaking as a teacher, for older children though, not babies: parent mornings are usually planned so that it doesn't matter which parent turns up or how often. Nobody is keeping a register. In our school the families who came once in the whole year were still welcome, and the children loved whoever came. One honest note to the teacher at the start, saying your schedule is unpredictable, will go a long way 🙂
0on Cousin's wedding in December. Our class 12 daughter wants to be there all four days
Teacher here, and I'd say let her go for the main two days, not all four. December in class 12 is when revision gets serious. That said, a bride cousin is not a small thing. She'll remember the wedding longer than any December mock 🙂
1on Her class 12 commerce tuition batch has grown to 40. Move her to a smaller one now?
Teacher here, CBSE side. Forty in a tuition batch is basically a second classroom. If her doubts are waiting till the end, that's the real problem, not the number itself. Before switching, can she sit in one class at the new place? Most will allow a trial. July is not too late, there's still a lot of syllabus ahead.
2on Four minutes with the class teacher at our first PTM. How do you make that time useful?
From the teacher's side of that table: come with one question, not five. 'What is one thing he should work on before the next test' gets you a real answer in four minutes. 'How is he doing' gets you 'doing well'. And most of us are happy to get a message before, it lets us look at the work instead of remembering it on the spot.
2on Caregiver wants Saturdays off from next month. I operate on Saturdays
Our daughter is 15 now so this is from memory. When she was a baby, her ajji came on Saturdays for almost a year, and when ajji couldn't, her amma's friend's helper came for the day. Ask your caregiver if she knows someone she trusts. Usually they have a sister or a neighbour who does the same work, and the baby gets someone familiar to her.
1on Three activities started and dropped in a year, and now she wants to try another
Same story with our magalu at that age. What helped a bit: she chose the thing, but agreed before starting to finish one full term whatever happened. After that it was her call. She dropped two that way and kept the third, which is still going.
1on One month old sleeps through the day and is wide awake from 11 pm to 3 am
Our daughter's ajji took her out on the verandah for a few minutes of morning light every day and swore that fixed it. Whether it was the light or just time passing, she was sleeping at night within a month.
3on Our daughter has opened a restaurant in the hall. Aaji does all the cooking
This is exactly how mine started at that age. She's about to start class 10 and the restaurant has turned into her taking over the kitchen every Sunday for one 'experiment'. Tell aaji to keep the recipe rights :)
0on Neighbour's 15 year old has offered to spend two afternoons a week with our daughter. For money.
My daughter is 15 and would happily do this, and she'd be good at it. She would also be on her phone half the time unless someone told her that wasn't the deal 🙂 Say it clearly at the start. And talk to the girl directly, not only through her amma.
3on Her classmates want her class 9 notes over the holidays, and she has started saying no
Told her about the call idea at dinner. She liked it more than she'd admit. One of the two has already fixed a Sunday call for chemistry, the other has gone quiet, which I suspect tells her what she needed to know. I've been instructed not to ask how the call goes.
4on She's asked to sit away from her best friend in class 10. The friend has taken it badly
Thank you. 'Don't explain again and again' is exactly what she has been doing, twice a day on the phone. I'll pass this on.
4on 14 year old wants a room of his own this summer. The only spare one is my study
Not brothers, but my daughter shared a room with her cousin every summer at my parents' place. The year she finally got a room of her own at home, she was lonely for a few weeks, and then you couldn't get her out of it. Maybe give the younger one something that's only his as well, so it isn't only the elder getting something 🙂
1on Daughter's college is selling a paid 'placement readiness' course for the summer. Worth it?
Not college level, but our school brings in outside 'skills' vendors too and the quality is all over the place. Some are good, some are a PDF and a certificate. Ask her seniors who did it last year, they'll tell her straight. Kids are brutal reviewers, no?
0on Our caregiver tells our son 'the crow will take you' when he won't eat
Here it was the 'police uncle'. My ajji used him on every child in the house, and still does on the neighbour's kid 🙂 Agree it wears off. Then you need a bigger police uncle.
