Class 10 and she's got the maths teacher every senior warned her about

fern_piano_3814

Three classes into class 10 and the seniors' verdict has already reached home: strictest maths teacher in the school, nobody crosses 15 in her unit tests, crying-in-the-washroom stories, the full package. Magalu has decided the year is over. I'm a teacher myself, at a different school, and I know how these legends grow. I'm probably one of them for somebody. But it's hard to say 'give her a month' to a 15 year old without sounding like I'm on the teachers' side. Her amma's line was 'strict teachers get results', which went down even worse. How do you talk a teenager down from a reputation before she's had a real chance to see for herself?

The legend is always worse than the person. My son spent most of class 6 terrified of a science teacher who turned out to be the one he still talks about. What helped (sort of) was not arguing with the stories at all, just asking after each class what she'd done that day. After a few weeks the stories and the actual days didn't match, and he noticed 🙂

Is there someone she trusts who isn't a parent, an older cousin perhaps, who had a strict teacher and came through fine? From you it will sound like one teacher defending another, as you say. I don't have a teenager yet, so this is only from watching my nephews, but they listened to cousins far more than to any of us. Has she said what worries her most: the marks, or being singled out in class?
