Daughter's college is selling a paid 'placement readiness' course for the summer. Worth it?

breezy_wave_7805

Molu finishes her second year next month. Her college has sent a circular about a six-week placement readiness programme in May and June: aptitude tests, mock interviews, communication sessions, training on one software tool. Optional, extra fee, certificate at the end. She's half interested, mostly because her friends are signing up. I run a factory, not an HR department, so I can't tell whether companies look at these certificates or whether it's someone making summer money off the college name. Anyone whose son or daughter did one, did it help when placements came?

Who runs it, the college's own placement cell or an outside training company?

Outside company, going by the circular. A name I've never heard of, with the college logo on top. That's half of why I'm suspicious 😊

Not college level, but our school brings in outside 'skills' vendors too and the quality is all over the place. Some are good, some are a PDF and a certificate. Ask her seniors who did it last year, they'll tell her straight. Kids are brutal reviewers, no?

six weeks of may and june is also her one long break before final year. would she rather spend it on an internship, or even just resting

son just finished inter so we're behind you. but his cousin did one of these during her b.com. she says the aptitude practice helped with the online tests, the rest was timepass

We hire for our family business. Nobody has ever brought one of these certificates to an interview, and I wouldn't know what to make of it if they did. Whether a person can talk sensibly across the table, that I notice. If the mock interviews are real practice with feedback, that part has value.

My son is in SSC, so I don't know about college placements. But same thing is going on at our level. Every coaching centre is asking money for POLYCET crash course, inter foundation course, everybody gives a certificate. I am asking parents whose children already finished, not the people selling. Same for your daughter, her seniors will tell the truth.
