She's in class 10 and has already decided: no entrance coaching, just a regular BSc

fern_piano_3814

Half her class has signed up for JEE and NEET foundation batches, and she has told us she wants none of it. She likes chemistry, wants a plain BSc somewhere decent, and plans to 'figure out the rest in college'. Being a teacher myself, I've seen what two years of coaching does to some of my students, so part of me is relieved. The other part keeps hearing the relatives. BSc means no future, only MSc and then what. Swalpa I worry they're not completely wrong. If your children did a regular BSc, what came after? Did skipping the entrance route close doors later, or not really? 🙂

Saving this. Meri beti, class 9, has started saying the same thing, so I'm reading for next year 🙂

One practical thing to check: which universities now admit to BSc through a common entrance test anyway. A few of my son's batchmates found that out late. It's not coaching-level preparation, but it isn't zero either ❤️

My son is two years into a BSc in physics after deciding against coaching, so I can describe the view from halfway. The course has been fine and he's far less burnt out than his friends who did two years of coaching. The trade-off is that the good options seem to come after the degree: a master's, a research internship, or a move into data work. He has had to go looking for them himself. Nobody hands them to you the way an entrance rank does.

my daughter did a bsc and then a master's in data science. her first job is on the same team as the engineers. it took her a year longer than them, that's the honest cost

Agree with the 'go looking' part. I came up through B.Tech from Warangal because nobody I knew considered anything else. Some of the sharpest analysts I've worked with since did a BSc and picked up skills on their own. Nobody in those interviews asked for an entrance rank.

My son did a BSc in microbiology. Relatives said all the same things. He's in his first job now, in a diagnostics lab, and doing fine. Not the fastest road, but it was his.

Half the class in foundation batches at 15 worries me more than her choice does. My daughter is a year behind and the pressure has already started in her class. If yours is clear she likes chemistry, that's more than most of them have.
