1on IB grade 3 to State Board class 4 at Dazzling High School. How do kids handle the first real exams?
I work on the coordination side in a school, so I've seen quite a few of these switches, mostly in the other direction. Kids from IB primary rarely struggle with the content. What they're not used to is writing long answers by hand against the clock. If you can, ask the school for a class 4 sample paper and just let her look at it, no pressure. Ammayi will feel better knowing what's coming 🙂
1on 13 year old's gaming hour ends just before her friends come online
Moving it to 8.30 means it ends right before bed though. With my daughter that was the issue, the game stops but the chat afterwards doesn't. Phone goes to the hall at 9.30 in our house, no exceptions, and even then some nights she's wired. Not saying don't do it, just plan for the after part also.
2on My 10 year old wants her own number for the class girls' chat group
Our daughter was 12 when this started for her batch. We put the group on the family tablet that stays in the hall. She could read and reply, but only out there, not in her room. Worked ok for a year, then she wanted her own phone anyway 🙂 so it buys time, not a solution.
0on 9 month old has refused solids for five days while two top teeth come in
Our elder one at that age refused everything except curd rice from her ammamma's hand. Nothing from us at all. I'd check if it's the food or the person.
0on At work I tell parents to stop checking the school portal daily. I check my daughter's every night
Sunday together is a good compromise. The remark is where I'll struggle. Professionally I know it's fine. As a nanna, less so 🙂
1on 15 yr old has started going for long walks alone after dinner. says he's 'thinking'
In school I see a lot of class 10 kids find their own way to switch off in June. Walking is one of the better ones. Maybe go along once, just once, without asking too many questions 🙂
1on Online 'pre-college' certificate from a foreign university. Has anyone's teen done one?
I see these certificates on student files at work. What reads well is what the child did with it afterwards, a project, a small blog, something with their own name on it. The certificate alone, people barely look at. Ma ammayi asked for one last year and I said do the free version first 😊
4on I come home for lunch between OPD and rounds, and every goodbye now ends in tears
From the school gate side: the second goodbye of the day is always harder than the first. Our chinnodu was like this when my partner worked from home for a few months and came out for lunch. What helped was the caregiver taking over before the door, not at it. Let the little one be busy with something when you leave, not watching you go 🙂
2on Is it worth visiting schools during the summer vacation, when nothing is running?
Speaking from the school side: the admissions office is usually open in May, the rest of the building is empty. You'll see the classrooms and the paint, not the school. Pillalu lenappudu choosthe, it's like seeing the kalyana mandapam the day after the wedding :) I'd use the leave to call and collect the basics: admission dates for class 5, documents, whether they test. Keep the real visit for a working day in July or August, even if it costs you a half day.
1on Three weeks with her grandparents in Hyderabad, and they want her reading Telugu by the end of it
Realistic goal: she recognises the vowels and a handful of consonants, and can read her own name and maybe thatha's. Anything beyond that in three weeks is the grandparent's goal, not the child's. Keep the slate though. Kids love a slate, and let her write on it whatever she wants some days.
1on How do nursery admissions work at St. Jhon High School, Habsiguda?
No experience of St. Jhon, so take this as general. At the nursery stage, most schools around here that say 'interaction' mean ten minutes of the child playing while someone watches, and the parents get asked about timings and who picks up. Nothing to prepare for. The thing I'd check myself is your last question. A nursery sharing corridors with class 10 boys at break time is a different place from a separate block. Chudandi once in person, during school hours if they allow it.
3on my 12 yr old has started asking what things cost, and then saying no to them himself
Could just be a careful kid. Mine has been like this since he was eight, counts every rupee, and nothing was ever wrong. Not every habit is a symptom 😊 I'd ask once, lightly, and if he shrugs, take him at face value.
1on How do you stop relatives kissing a one month old on the face?
Thirteen years ago my athamma solved this for us without being asked. Anyone who went for the baby's face got 'arey, dishti tagulutundi' and a gentle push away. Nobody argues with dishti 😊 If you have one elder on your side, let them say it. It lands very differently coming from them.
4on Cricket bat repair around Sanathnagar? The handle on my son's bat has started turning
Not the person you asked, but if it's the one I'm thinking of, it's inside, behind the ground. Ask anyone at the nets in the evening and they'll point you to him. We went there for our son's pads last year, quick and no fuss.
Ask them straight out which board's report the class 7 children leave with, and ask for the affiliation number. 'International' in a school's name can mean Cambridge, or IB, or the school's own programme with a nice logo. I don't know this school at all, so no comment on them. That's a one-line answer for any school 🙂
0on An aunt told my 12 year old she's 'getting healthy'. She won't eat in front of relatives now
I'd talk to the aunt, privately and once. Not a fight, just 'please don't comment on her food, she's at that age'. Most elders stop when someone says it plainly, no? Our 13 year old had a mavayya who did this with her height, every single visit. One quiet word from my partner and it stopped. With the child herself, less is more. Keep meals normal, don't watch her plate, don't praise or comment on what she eats either.
