Three weeks with her grandparents in Hyderabad, and they want her reading Telugu by the end of it

quiet_bookmark_4085

We fly from Noida to my parents' place in Hyderabad next week for three weeks of the summer break. Our daughter has just finished class 1. She understands Telugu well and speaks a little, but has never been taught the script. My father has bought a slate and an alphabet chart and has a plan. I'm all for it, but I know my father, and three weeks of daily lessons could put her off for good. On the other hand, this is the one stretch of the year when she's surrounded by the language. What's a realistic goal for three weeks at her age? Letters? A few words? Just enjoying it?

Realistic goal: she recognises the vowels and a handful of consonants, and can read her own name and maybe thatha's. Anything beyond that in three weeks is the grandparent's goal, not the child's. Keep the slate though. Kids love a slate, and let her write on it whatever she wants some days.

As a thatha who tried this: ten minutes a day, after something nice, not before. My grandson learnt 'amma', 'aavu' and his own name in one summer and was very proud of himself. Tell your father to stop while she still wants more.

'Stop while she still wants more' is the most useful line here. Did you use a book, or only the slate and words from around the house?
