1on Is it fine to let a 1 year old play in the next room if I can hear her?
With my son I kept to 'hear and glance' at that age. I moved a small mat to the kitchen doorway so I only had to turn my head to see him. Out of sight and quiet was the combination that always sent me running, and nine times out of ten he was eating something he'd found under the sofa.
6on Found out from his cousin that my 14 year old is on Instagram. Do I tell him I know?
I'd tell him you know, and tell him how, and make it clear his cousin isn't in trouble. We had nearly the same discovery last year with our son, through a classmate's mother. I asked for exactly two things: the account stays private, and he tells me if someone he doesn't know messages him. No following, no password. He agreed faster than I expected, I think because I asked for much less than he was bracing for. That's been fine so far.
0on Son's cricket friends all joined a foundation batch. What is the week like?
We're IB so there's no board exam pushing this yet, but my son's tuition friends are all in some foundation class or other and he came home asking about it in the summer. What helped was letting him sit in on one trial session. Two hours later he'd decided his friends were more fun outside class than inside it. Might be different for your boy, but a trial costs very little.
2on LKG or UKG timings at Bhashyam Blooms in Langar Houz
We're in Rajendranagar, not far from there, though I don't know anyone at that school. If you can, visit once on a normal school day and not only on admission day. When my son started school years ago, watching how the youngest classes were handled at dispersal told me more than any brochure.
3on learning support teacher left mid term and the school hasn't said what happens to the reading group
Ask the coordinator, not the new teacher. Something like "my daughter was in the reading group, could you tell me when it restarts and whether anything changes?" It's a question about the schedule, not about the person.
6on Does swimming class keep going through the winter in Hyderabad?
My son is 13 too and swims all year. The early morning batch thins out in December, but the evening one carries on fine. Get a good cap and make sure she dries her hair before heading home, that's most of the battle.
1on Two years early for nursery? Divya Jyothi High School is five minutes from our house
For nursery we chose a school 40 minutes away because of its name and regretted it within a term. My son is 13 and in IB now, a different world, but that part I remember clearly. A small child in a van that long every day came home exhausted. Walking distance matters far more at three than people admit. You have plenty of time, though. One is early.
4on Class teacher went on long leave and my 8 year old says the new one 'doesn't like her'
Is it the new teacher, or the change itself? With my son it was mostly that the routine had changed, and he blamed the nearest adult.
6on 10 year old has decided on archery. Anyone near Manikonda?
My son's school ran it as a club for one term last year. He loved it, and then the club didn't run again. If you find a proper place please share, he still brings it up.
0on Moving from Noida to Hyderabad in December. How do I tell my 9 year old?
Same experience as a child. My father's transfer when I was 10. What helped me most was my mother getting my best friend's address and a stack of inland letters before we left. I wrote for almost two years. Now it would be a video call, but the idea is the same.
1on Caught my class 6 son in three small lies this week. Nothing serious, which is what bothers me
The bath one made me laugh. Ours used to wet the towel and hang it up. I only found out because the soap never got any smaller.
0on Our caregiver feeds the baby while walking him round the building. I can't do that every evening
Our caregiver did the walking feed too. What helped was asking her to do one meal a day at the table with him, just so he got used to sitting, and letting the walks stay for the other meals. My son is 12 now and nobody remembers the battle except me.
3on Class 4 daughter reads under the blanket with a torch after lights out
Let her have it. My son read like that till about 11 and then stopped almost overnight. I'd happily have the torch under the blanket back.
0on Pregnancy brain hit at board game night. I couldn't explain a game I taught everyone
The last line made me laugh. Next month appoint someone else as the rules person and keep the winning job for yourself.
1on Class 2 homework shows up on the app at 9 pm, when she's already asleep
Speak to two or three other parents before the PTM so you're not the only hand going up. Teachers hear it differently when it's a group.
1on Class 4 Hindi: he keeps getting the gender of words wrong, because Marathi does it differently
Hindi and Urdu at home here, and even we never learnt gender as rules. You hear 'paani thanda hai' a thousand times and that's it. For a child without that background I'd try listening rather than reading: Hindi audio stories or old cartoons in Hindi in the car. The ear needs the repetitions his reading isn't giving him.
2on 13 year old wants to move into my study because the baby wakes her at night
Could you swap for a few months and see? Babies don't wake twice a night forever, and your demo setup might fit in a corner of the bedroom more easily than her sleep fits anywhere else.
We went IB partly so we would never have this conversation, and now I'm told the same scramble happens before DP anyway. Does the integrated college replace school completely, or is it school with coaching on top?
2on Short Sunday hike with both kids. I carried three kilos of their rocks down the hill
Keep the drawer. Last month I found my son's old 'leaf box' while clearing a shelf. He's 12, pretended not to care, and then quietly took it to his room.
1on 7 months old and he's found his own voice. Full-volume shrieking, everywhere we go
My son was a big shrieker too. Now he's 12 and I can't get two words out of him at dinner. Enjoy the noise while it lasts.
0on My 9 year old says it's 'not fair' that a classmate doesn't have to write the Telugu test
What worked with my son at that age was glasses. Nobody thinks it's unfair that a child who can't see the board gets glasses. Some children need a different arrangement, and the school decides who gets it. He accepted that, mostly. He still muttered about it now and then.
3on Son's class 6 timetable has 'AI' twice a week. What do they do in it?
We're at an IB school, so there it's called 'digital design', not AI, but I had the same question last year. It turned out to be half posters about how computers think and half making a chatbot in a block coding app. My son liked the chatbot part. The posters, less.
2on Summer reading list for grade 1. She can't read most of it yet
In my son's grade 1 the list was meant for reading together, and the teacher said so at the first meeting. I'd assume this one is too. Nobody expects a 5 year old to get through those alone.
1on A customer wants a birthday cake her son will eat. He only eats a few plain things
A trial piece is a lovely idea, I hadn't thought of that. She mentioned one plain vanilla sponge from a bakery near her that he eats, so maybe I start there and match the texture.
2on badminton coach moved the summer batch to 3 pm 'because the court is free'. it's 42 out
Same thing happened with cricket nets. Four parents messaged the coach together asking for the 6.30 pm slot, and he moved it within a week. One parent asking gets 'they're used to it'. Four parents asking gets a new timing.
