Found out from his cousin that my 14 year old is on Instagram. Do I tell him I know?

My son's cousin let it slip over the holidays that he has an Instagram account. He hasn't told us. It isn't a secret exactly, we just never discussed it, and I've found out sideways. I don't want to look through it behind his back, and I don't want to demand his password. But I'd like some idea of who can see what he posts and who can message him. If I bring it up, he'll know his cousin talked, and he may just get more careful about what he tells anyone. If I say nothing, I'm pretending I don't know and hoping it never matters. For those who've been here with a 14 year old: did you raise it, and how did you open the conversation without it sounding like you'd been checking up on him?

I'd tell him you know, and tell him how, and make it clear his cousin isn't in trouble. We had nearly the same discovery last year with our son, through a classmate's mother. I asked for exactly two things: the account stays private, and he tells me if someone he doesn't know messages him. No following, no password. He agreed faster than I expected, I think because I asked for much less than he was bracing for. That's been fine so far.

Asking for less than he's bracing for is the part I was missing. That's something he could agree to without losing face. And you're right, the cousin shouldn't pay for it. I'll talk to him this weekend.
