Class 4 Hindi: he keeps getting the gender of words wrong, because Marathi does it differently

lagoon_balcony_3211

We speak Marathi at home, so reading and writing Hindi was never the hard part for my son. The trouble is ling. Marathi has three genders and Hindi has two, and the words don't line up. Paani is neuter for us, so he has no instinct for it being masculine. Pustak is neuter at home, kitaab is feminine at school. Every Hindi worksheet comes back with the verb endings circled. His teacher says read more Hindi. Fair, but he reads it like a Marathi boy and his ear corrects nothing. Has anyone found something that helped a child build a feel for Hindi gender when the home language keeps pulling the other way?

marathi house here too, daughter is the same age. she argues with the textbook. her line is 'dahi can't be a he'. no fix yet but it helped when we stopped translating from marathi in our heads and just said the hindi sentence out loud with her, wrong ones included

Hindi and Urdu at home here, and even we never learnt gender as rules. You hear 'paani thanda hai' a thousand times and that's it. For a child without that background I'd try listening rather than reading: Hindi audio stories or old cartoons in Hindi in the car. The ear needs the repetitions his reading isn't giving him.
