1on Last Diwali an elder called my son fat in front of everyone. What do I say this time?
One small thing from our side. We used to answer with 'she's not fat, she's healthy'. Our daughter told us later that was almost worse, because now two adults were discussing her body in front of everyone. So we don't correct the description at all anymore. We just say 'we don't talk about bodies' and move on. Sounds stiff, but the aunts got used to it surprisingly fast haha
0on Spent twenty minutes folding the new stroller. My partner's aunt did it in one go.
Ha. I've had two kids go through strollers and I never learnt what the second lever on ours was for. We gave it away still not knowing. The aunts always know. Nobody knows how they know.
6on His grade 4 project is on cricket scores. The teacher wants something 'deeper'
Our daughter's class 4 project was on the IPL auction, and her teacher also thought it was shallow until she worked out which teams had overpaid. Help him find the bigger question inside it, pitch, crowd, travel, and let him make the case himself. I say this with a teacher for a partner 😄
0on School bus tracking app wants access to contacts and files. Did anyone say no?
Read this at breakfast and went straight to settings. It had my contacts and my calendar. Turned both off, bus still shows up on the map. Thanks for ruining my Sunday morning 😄
1on Evening football around Bachupally for a 7 year old who mostly wants to run
At 7, 'just run around' is basically all football is anyway 😂 our son's coach spends half the session on tag games and nobody minds
2on My 11 year old needs to start using deodorant and won't discuss it
With my daughter the school's health session did half the work. She came home and announced it like breaking news. Not sure boys get as much of that. The one thing I'd avoid is an audience. My father raised it at the dinner table in front of my cousins when I was about twelve and I still remember it, three decades on.
1on How much do you prepare a 6 year old for her own student-led conference?
Our school had a 'portfolio day' in class 1 that was similar. My son spent ten of the fifteen minutes on a drawing of a lizard and two on all his maths. The teacher said afterwards that was completely normal and she learnt more from the lizard than the maths.
1on No more hugs at the school gate. She's 11 and I'm taking it badly
Late to this, but my 12 year old waves from the bus window only if none of her friends are on that side. My 6 year old still runs at me like I'm a goalpost. One stage replaces the other, apparently
2on Class 1 has a star chart for good behaviour. My son hasn't had a star in two weeks
Our son is in class 1 too and came home with a similar report about stars, except his complaint is that the girls get them all 😄 I do think some of these charts favour the kids who are naturally quiet. That said, your son knowing exactly where his name sits on the chart tells you it matters to him. I'd mention it to the teacher. Once.
3on Class 1 school wants a TC from his preschool, and the preschool says they don't issue TCs
Update: rang the preschool this morning and asked for a 'bonafide' instead of a TC. Same office, same lady, instant yes. Ready by Monday. Two weeks of back and forth over one word 😅 Fingers crossed the counter at the school is happy with it.
1on Elder son is in CBSE, and the nursery closest to home is Krishnaveni Talent School, State Board
We looked at this for our younger one and didn't go ahead, mainly because of the calendar. Different holidays meant someone was always home while the other had school, and exam weeks never lined up. Not a dealbreaker, just more juggling than we'd guessed 😄
0on Class 7 rep elections on Friday. Daughter wants me to write her speech, with jokes
Good rule. She has a line about always being last to the water cooler, which might do it.
0on Class 7 rep elections on Friday. Daughter wants me to write her speech, with jokes
Fair, but she isn't asking me to write it. The points are hers. She wants two jokes at the start because the other candidate is the class comedian, and I suspect she's right about what wins.
3on My 4 year old picks every bit of onion and tomato out of his sabzi
We blend. Onion, tomato, sometimes a carrot nobody needs to know about, all into the gravy. Son is 6 and still hasn't caught on 😄 The sister commentary is the bigger problem, I think.
1on Is it odd to ask a school to put us in touch with a couple of current parents before we pay?
We asked while applying for our son's class 1. The school gave us two names. Both lovely, both clearly briefed 😄 More useful was asking in our building group. Someone always knows someone with a child there, and they'll tell you the boring stuff the school won't.
1on Granddaughter, 4, has started telling small lies. Very obvious ones
At four ours had a whole series of these, all about who started it. The thing that helped was to stop asking when we could already see the answer. 'Did you eat the biscuits?' just invites the pigeon. 'I see you ate the biscuits, next time ask me' leaves nothing to invent 😄
