1on Grade 4 son has worked out how to farm points on the school's maths app
the history part is key. my daughter's app had a history tab and the shortcuts stopped the week she knew I'd looked at it
2on preschool wants a parent for the clay ganesha session on a weekday morning
I missed most of these when mine was small, outpatient days don't move. She doesn't remember a single one now. What she does remember is the one sports day I turned up unannounced. So maybe pick a different event and make that one count
0on Son wants to skip college and join our distribution business after Inter
Is he asking for no degree, or no full-time college? Those are two separate discussions, and your partner may be fine with the second.
2on Visiting my nephew's new baby. Is gold still expected, or do young parents prefer something useful?
The food one, yes. Nobody brought us meals and I still remember that. A small gold piece plus a week of food covers both sides of the family.
6on my 7 year old has been checking on the idli batter every hour like it's a patient
At that age mine named our curd setting 'the experiment'. She's nearly 15 and is still the one who checks whether the curd has set.
0on Four minutes with the class teacher at our first PTM. How do you make that time useful?
I send three questions by email two days before. Last time the teacher had answers ready and we spent the four minutes on the one that mattered most. Much better than walking in cold.
2on Elder son is in class 10 and wants hotel management. Which stream keeps that open?
Slightly disagree. If it's the running-a-place side, commerce keeps that better than science does. The 'just in case' science route is mostly for the relatives.
4on Daycare sends him home for a runny nose, and in July he always has one
A lot of babies in their first daycare year have a cold more weeks than not, especially now. Get him seen once by your paediatrician so someone has properly looked at him, and ask for a short note saying he's fine to attend. Most daycares will take that. Fever, fast breathing or not feeding is a different story, of course.
0on Takes his diaper off at every nap. Every single nap
back-to-front onesie. ugly, effective. ours also grew out of it before we got round to anything cleverer 🤷
0on Class 5 son wants a note to skip PE. Turns out a boy has started calling him 'motu'
Skipping PE gives the boy who said it exactly what he wanted. I'd tell the class teacher, quietly, now. Names like that stick fast if nobody stops them in the first few weeks.
2on Class 11 starts next week and he has bought a whiteboard. So far it says PLAN.
Ours has a corkboard. It holds one pin and a concert ticket from two years ago 🤷 At least yours has a heading.
2on Partner is home this year, back at work next year. Which version of us do we pick an LKG school for?
Agree, from a different angle. My partner's hours were supposed to ease after the first year. They didn't. Being close to school saved us more often than anything else when she was small.
2on 14 year old says he wants a game design degree. What do those graduates do afterwards?
Bengaluru too. A classmate of my daughter has an older brother who did animation after class 12 instead of engineering. He's at a studio now, but he told them the first year was mostly unpaid internships. Worth asking about that gap.
3on My daughter would rather I skip her show than leave halfway for a call
Been on both sides of this. The calls never come when you plan for them. I'd go, sit at the back, and accept I might miss the end. But I'd also tell her she can change her mind any time before Saturday.
2on Maths workbook has the answers printed at the back, and he's found them
Suspicious is right 🤷 Enjoy it while it lasts. Mine went through the same phase in class 7 and it held till about the first unit test.
1on Forty minutes between getting home and bedtime, and both kids want all of them
Long days here too. I gave up on the 40 minutes being perfect. Some evenings it's a cry and one story and that's fine. They remember the weekends more.
