I'm a physician and my teenager fact-checks me against a fitness influencer

She's home all day for the holidays, which means a lot of reels. This week I've been wrong about drinking water with meals, wrong about her skipping breakfast, and apparently the vitamin D her doctor suggested is a 'scam'. All from a man with very white teeth who sells protein bars. I don't want to pull rank every time, because 'I'm a doctor' clearly isn't working. But some of this is plain nonsense and she's starting to act on it. How do you argue with an algorithm when you're the boring parent? 🤷

Mine is ten and already quotes 'a doctor on YouTube' at me. Not a real doctor, as far as I can tell 🤷

16 here. still happens. it gets more specific, not less

What helped with our beti was asking her to show me where he got it from. Not to win, just to look at it together. Half the time she lost interest once she saw it was one man saying it. The other half, I learnt something 🙂

doing this with my son about creatine right now. looking at it together works better than me quoting papers. he stops listening the moment i sound like work

Worth knowing which accounts she follows, not only what she repeats. With my daughter I learnt more from her follow list than from all our conversations. The reels she brings up are only the ones she chooses to tell you about.

On the breakfast one, could you make it about her day rather than the science? My daughter skipped breakfast for a month and was flat by 11 every morning. Once she noticed that herself, the argument was over. Nothing I said did it ❤

my son informed me last week that sleep is 'optional if you have discipline'. he was asleep on the sofa by nine. some arguments win themselves.
